NVIDIA New Update 525 - DEFECTIVE, DO NOT INSTALL [SOLVED]

Post by cmdrmic »

CAUTION:

The New Nvidia Graphic Drivers Set 525, which came up tonight in the Update Manger pretty much wrecked by system, causing insane bars and flickering on all sub menus, and within Firefox. Just Terrible. This update should be revoked A.S.A.P. It causes the very problems, it says it was fixing (in Notes)... none of which I had, UNTIL I installed the update.

Thank heavens for TIMESHIFT, which saved the day!

If you are going to install ANYTHING from Nvidia, please consider doing a full backup first... This has happened repeatedly in the past. I believe their team does not do due diligence and testing before uploading updates, to be tested by the masses.

Ugh.

The problem is with your system, not the driver. Works perfectly for me.

What team? Nvidia does not create the Ubuntu packages.

Additionally, you posted data indicating you are not even using the Nvidia driver. Your system is in Intel Powersave mode.

Hi, Good Morning. Thanks for your reply.

RE: "Not running Nvidia"

Huh? It appears from my Nvidia Settings page, I'm on "Nvidia On-Demand", so maybe that's why it shows the Intel driver in my report" As far as "Team", LOL... is there not some group of individuals somewhere creating and pumping out these Nvidia updates?

Looks like 525 is not going to be around much longer... 530 in beta...

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2023/03/n ... for-linux/

(I posted this heads up and warning to other new installers of LM21.1... who may also not be Nvidia driver experts... and to sing the accolades of Timeshift as a dependable quick fix to such kerfuffles!)

The video disturbances, initiated by this update were serious! Super glitchy. I have reason to believe it might have something to do with running an external monitor as the primary display, with the laptop screen off.

Again, thanks very kindly for your input.

Cheers, Mic.

No. In On-Demand mode the drivers for both GPUs should be loaded. That is not what your output indicates.

Canonical packages the driver, which Nvidia releases, into the .deb files you install. That packaging makes it easier to install on your system.

The 530 driver is the short-term new features driver. The new-features drivers come out in addition to the regular production drivers so the 525 is not going away any time soon. The 525 driver will likely be replaced by a future 535 driver.

My Nividia 525 update today came in very slowly even though my plugged in speed is 485 mbps. I'll be watching it.
I moved to kernel 6.1.0-1008-oem yesterday because a respected guru on this forum said it was ok for Mint. Hope there is no connection. At least I don't see a conflict between the kernel and Nvidia (yet).

Have to agree with the bulk consensus here. I installed the latest driver this morning and have been on this PC for about 4 hours tonight (including an hour of gaming) and haven't had any issues at all. I do agree however that Timeshift can be a lifesaver when something goes wrong :).

This update has created similar problems for my installation as well. It only occurs in Firefox where it causes some glitching issues - the active tab becomes transparent for a few seconds on it's own and I am left looking at the desktop. I will probably roll back to earlier drivers as I haven't found a fix yet

My configuration is the following: Asus G14 with gtx 1650 mobile graphics in performance mode and antialiasing turned off. Firefox hardware acceleration turned off

Welcome to the forum, Daiba.

If you are only having the issue with Firefox, then you should probably file a bug with Firefox.

After installing the latest drivers 525.89.02-0ubuntu0.22.04.1- in hope that the situation improves I actually have a different issue now. My monitor runs at 100hz via displayport. When I set the refresh rate at either 100hz or 85hz I get quite bad flickering. It does not occur at 60hz. Before installing these drivers I was fine at either 100hz/85hz. Unfortunately its impossible to downgrade via the driver manager since there are missing dependencies. At the moement I am considering changing to mesa drivers.

Just an update:

I'm very happy to report, that with the latest update to the Nvidia 525 Driver, this issue of flicking and barring, etc. on my system seems to be completely resolved. I had rolled back the offending Nvidia Driver update, and ignored installing it again... Now, after first backing up with TimeShift, I just installed the lastest 525 Nvidia Driver set...

Wooo-hooo. Workin' fine! :D :D :D

Issue: SOLVED (at least until Nvidia breaks it again). LOL.
Thanks to all who commented on this issue...

Cheers (& Happy Easter).

Take a Timeshift snapshot of that working system so you can revert back to it if you have any future problems. ;)
