Frequent hard disk thrashing/system freezes

Post by Nami »

For the last few months, my computer has been sporadically thrashing and slowing down to the point of becoming inoperable. The disk read light stays constantly on. The mouse cursor will take a second to move if it hasn't recently been moving. Keyboard inputs take several seconds to go through. I am able to go from X to tty with Ctrl-Alt-F1, but the login prompt takes a very long time to come up and it's rare that I can even get to the password prompt before the login times out. At one point I was able to do pkill -u [user], but the thrashing persisted into the login screen.

At this point, this issue occurs about once every day. It seems to be more likely to happen when I'm doing something resource intensive like VirtualBox or playing a game, but it's not exclusive to that and often seemingly just happens.

Of everything I can find, this thread is the closest that describes it: viewtopic.php?t=376949

Trying the suggestions in that thread:
  • zram is already enabled.
  • SysRq R, E, I; used in the tty, report that these commands are disabled. S, U, B do work.
  • Timeshift was set to boot only a few days ago, which has not fixed this.
  • I have not used Memtest86+ yet.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The internet is riddled with reports of btrfs thrashing.
I don't know what is wrong with btrfs, but it obviously does not work for everyone.
