[Solved] Linux mint fails to boot after installation

Post by Kosp44 »

Hello! I'm a Linux newbie.
I try to install current stable version 21.1 Vera Cinnamon Edition on Asus K53SC laptop. It supports legacy BIOS boot mode. I use a separate physical SDD for this purpose so when installed I chose to erase disc and the installer created all the partitions automatically.
I cannot boot from the drive. On startup I get Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key

I can boot from the usb stick made with Rufus but only in compatibility mode or using nomodeset boot option.
Here's the system info I obtain using inxi -Fxxxrz while booted into the live media

It seems to me that my BIOS has no secure boot options, TMP in particular. Fast boot neither (here proposed to check it).

Currently I haven't managed to find out anything else. Help please!

UPD
It seems that grub is on the disk with windows so I managed to get boot screen setting both disks to the boot order. But nevertheless I cannot boot the system - I stuck at black screen. I tried to modify the boot options from quiet splash to nomodeset but it doesn't help.

LM 21.1 installs on both BIOS and UEFI mode and that sda1 partition would be the bios-grub one as per sudo parted -l. You will be able to select SSD drive (not UEFI or ubuntu option if present) on computer boot menu or get into computer Setup, ensure Fast Boot is disabled and SSD is you first boot option.

Maybe you placed grub(bios) on wrong disk as you said after editing previous post...

If it does not work, boot Linux Mint Live and run Boot Repair (Menu>Administration>Boot Repair) with BootInfo summary option to share url when offered. Do not run Standard/Recommended repair option as it would try to repair UEFI boot when EFI partition is present.

Thank you! Yes grub is on the other disk. But boot fails. I've done the steps, here's the url

There is nothing, what could boot. Your only partition in system report is less than 4 GB in size, far too few to hold a system, and only 123 MB of it are used.

Notice final BR recomendations. It will try to reinstall grub (bios) on sdb2 so you can try Recommended repair option but it is already installed and it looks ok.

Also if you have placed that ssd first on boot order or booting ssd from computer boot menu, then the problem with black screen would be because of graphic card/s driver or...not boot/GRUB.

You said you have already tried removing quite splash and adding nomodeset w/o result...but you didn't comment what see on terminal (fails, errors or last process charging).

@Cosmo

That's Live USB system root. See BR report on link. Mint's root partition is sdb3
sdb3 1054720 250068991 249014272 118.7G Linux filesystem

I managed to enter the virtual terminals. The 7th is the stuck one there there's only an underscore blinking.
In the 1st I logged in and after that I got failure messages, the photo attached

So problem is Nvidia driver/Optimus. You will need to install Nvidia semiprivative driver. You would be able to ubuntu-drivers devices and install recommended one on that list( sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-XXX most probably the legacy one nvidia-driver-390 for old Fermi series graphics cards as yours)

In other hand be sure you have no option to select graphic card on computer Setup where you can choose integrated(igpu)/dedicated(dgpu)/Optimus, interchangeable or both. If it exist and you can choose the integrated one do it by now. Then try to boot and install Nvidia driver on a working graphical session (Menu>Administration>Driver manager>...)

If you have not that option, Nvidia Optimus would be enabled by default but you can use i915.modeset=1 nouveau.modeset=0 parameters to try to boot with integrated graphic card and do as indicated.

Thank you a lot! I installed the nvidia-driver-390 using apt and the GUI works.
Did you find out that from the inxi output Device-2: NVIDIA GF119M [GeForce GT 520MX] vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A?

I had no option while installing to select graphic card. Maybe it was in some hidden options for advanced setup but I left everything default and didn't check that options.

Yes, GF1XX means it´s a Fermi graphic card. See here.
The Linux 390.* legacy driver series is the last to support GF1xx ("Fermi") GPUs. Support for new Linux kernels and X servers, as well as fixes for critical bugs, will be included in 390.* legacy releases through the end of 2022.

Yes. Edit your first post (click on pencil icon on the right) and add [Solved] to subject.
