video freezes with buzzing sound

Post by DomBJ »

Hi,
After a synaptic updates, I started to have problems when paying videos on firefox: its freezes after 5 min with a buzzing sound. If I pauses and replay, it goes well for a few minutes and freezes again.

Memory: 1.82 GiB

You have Cinnamon installed, which is the most memory-heavy of the Mint desktops (4GB is needed for Cinnamon). Running a browser and watching videos is a memory intensive activity. I'm actually surprised that this works for you at all, and atom processors are weak, too.

Open a terminal and run top. It will show you the real-time memory (and cache and buffering) being used.

The MATE desktop might (I say might) work better for you. Mint Xfce, maybe, but Mint isn't a low-resource distribution. Anti-X would probably be a good bet. If you go with an arch-based, EndeavourOS runs well with 2GB and Xfce--I've used it to host VM's on 4GB laptops with the VM using 2GB of available ram.

Bottom line is, I think you're pushing your hardware past its limits.

That sounds like the known issue on Atom CPUs which your computer has.

Please check the Tips for Troubleshooting Sound Issues Rev. 1 and go to the section titled "BEEP with Intel Atom/Celeron/Pentium Computers" which is the last section in the first post for a solution which has worked for a number of people.

Sound Server-2: PulseAudio v: 15.99.1 running: yes
Sound Server-3: PipeWire v: 0.3.48 running: yes

If that does not work, we will need to further investigate.

Glad it worked. Please go to your first post in this topic, click the pencil icon, and add [SOLVED] to the beginning of the title so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.

I have an Asus E200AH which has only 2GB memory and 32GB storage, and I had the same problem which was indeed solved this way. Just to let you know it plays video without a problem, in spite of its small memory.
