kernel 6.1.0.1013-oem PROBLEM SOLVED

Post by stevengarland »

After installing this kernel this morning as part of a regular update from Update Mgr my Google Chrome stable is no longer stable. It was working fine with 1012.
I did a deep restart but no help.

When loading the system, hold down the Shift or Escape button to enter the GRUB's Menu. Select Advanced Options and load the previous core. Then enter the update manager and uninstall the problematic kernel.

Second option:
Restore the working system from the last Timeshift snapshot you have.

I moved back to 1012 using grub and it made no difference. Google Chrome stable Chrome 114 (114.0.5735.52/.53) updated yesterday may 24. It worked all day, with kernel 1012, until I shut off overnight. When I went back up this morning the problem started. Based on the facts here I think that the problem is with Chrome stable and not with the kernel.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the Chrome with no result.

Sorry, I can't help with Chrome. I hate that browser from the time it came out and I saw that it created folders all over the place in Windows so they could spy more efficiently and so I never use it.
It occurred to me that the settings are kept in the home folder. Presumably if you uninstall Chrome and delete the .Chrome folder in the home directory, that will fix the problem, but you'll have to set up Chrome again. Then block the chrome update via the blacklist.

Chrome is the most popular browser. There must be a reason why it is so. I have been using it for years.

Please see this topic Google chrome strange behavior which seems to indicate the issue may relate to a Chrome setting. If you retained your settings when you uninstalled/reinstalled Chrome, that could explain why doing that did not work.

Thanks SMG
I have been working on this and have narrowed my problem to a recent update dpkg 1.21ubuntu2.2. If I eliminate that update, then chrome stable workds just fine.
I don't know why. Glad that I had a Timeshift to use.

Firefox continued to work normally.

Actually, you have verified the problem is in Chrome.

If only one application (Chrome) has problems and all the rest do not, then the problem is not the update but in the application.

If the problem was with the update, then more than Chrome would be having issues and that is not the case.

Why would the update only effect Chrome? At least for me.

I completely removed Chrome using syanaptic, rebooted, reloaded Chrome, and it still didn't work untio I deleted that update pkg

Because the bug is in Chrome. There are a slew of topics on this forum with people having problems with Chrome. Over the last day or so at least a dozen people have posted about Chrome now not working. There are also various changes people have made to their Chrome install so it now works. There are a few people who have done all the updates and their Chrome still works; they never had a problem.

I already explained to you that if you reused your Chrome settings then that was probably why removing and then re-installing Chrome did not fix your issue. I'm guessing the bug must be somewhere in the settings.
