[SOLVED] LM 21.1 Intermittent Freezing related to graphics?

Post by mintybarrels »

YOYOYO....

I'm back but with more info.

So, first of all, can anyone confirm if I'm running the correct kernel for Intel 11th Gen?

I've been grappling with an intermittent freeze for awhile now. It would seem like one of a few things happens.

Either the graphics freeze, but I can still hear the audio, and keystrokes and mouse clicks are still working in the background, but just not showing on the monitor... Indicating that the laptop is working, but just the screen is frozen. Peculiarly, the mouse never seems to freeze. It will always track around the screen, but might have the 'doing something swirl' frozen on, instead of a pointer arrow.

OR,

The audio freezes, along with screen and everything. Mouse might still work for moving around, but possibly not clicking, or doing things - hard to say if the graphics are freezing because I can't see what mouse clicks are doing...

OR,

For some reason, often Rhythmbox seems like a trigger for the lock up. Either opening Rhythmbox, or listening to it for a few songs, often seems to be the start of a lock up.

SMG had hypothesized it was hardware related.

I can say that:

All firmware is up to date - after a windows re-install just for the sake of updating to the latest firmware.

All drives, cpu, graphics, everything in the UEFI diagnositc menu checks out to be 'PASSED'.

(Are these extended tests to be trusted? OR, are there pro versions which might detect something more nuanced?)

Added 32GB memory also checked out to pass memtestx86pro, at the computer shop that installed my RAM.

I've switched nvme ssds to each other's port, in case improper seating, or the port was the problem instead of the SSD where my O/S lives.

STILL FREEZING....!!!

I've tried using some different mesa drivers, and changing from p-state to acpi. Neither has stopped the freeze.

However, I would be interested in learning more about these tweaks, or if someone might know more about compatibility....?

I've tried Muffin Man's suggestions of temporarily editing the boot with acpi=off and noacpi after quiet splash

Still freezing!!!

Any other ideas, or things I can try?

Thank you to everyone who has contributed in my LM 21.1 journey. In the least, I"m learning a lot.

On my super old laptop, I've just upgraded to 21.1 and it runs great. No freezes, or anomalies so far.

Hoping somehow, there's a way to figure out this issue so it works just as well on my newer, better laptop.

Sincerely Yours,

Inxi says that's intel TIger Lake video, which is actually 12th gen and quite new. I think you probably need a newer kernel.

First, if you don't know how to boot from an earlier kernel and remove the newer one if it makes things worse, do a search first and find out how.

Then read this (most Linux blogs are crap but this is a good one and written by a memeber of this forum):

I've already tried

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04c
a, b, and c.

And, I'm very familiar with Pjotr's blog and have incorporated a lot of his tips/tweaks into my re-install set up routine. Hopefully they're not the cause of, or connected to my issue?

A little bit of information can be dangerous in the hands of the ignorant.

But, considering that tiger lake is 12th gen (I thought my inxi said it was 11th, but what do I know?) I will try oem b again, and see if it's somehow better and has solved my issue.

Thank you,

Here is my latest theory...

IF, I have a bad SSD... and, when Rhythmbox tried to access data on the corrupted SSD... Or, if the SSD was fine, but the data was corrupted...

Would that freeze my computer?

It was a bad SSD, ADATA XPG FURY - was not Linux compatible, and or was junk.
