Problem with my Intel HD Graphics after installing Linux Mint and trying to run a game

Post by thementalinstrummer »

Hi guys. I just installed Linux Mint yesterday (before i had Debian 11 Bullseye), and the first issue that i encountered is that my graphic drivers are broken.

I installed Wine development version, and when i want to start a game (like GTA San Andreas) the game doesn't open. I tried to launch the game on the terminal ("wine gta_sa.exe") and the console shows this error:

Code: Select all

Or when i run the redream emulator (Sega Dreamcast Emulator) there are several graphical bugs (square shadows, broken transparency effects)

I tried everything: changing to stable version, installing mesa from the repositories and nothing, the game's still not working.

I'm new on linux so i really don't know how fix this. On Debian 11 i didn't have this problem, i mean, the game opens but runs very slow and laggy, and in the case of Sonic Adventure from Dreamcast, the game runs perfectly without those graphical bugs

Sorry for my bad engrish, my language is spanish. Thanks

Welcome to the forum, thementalinstrummer.

Just because there is a problem running a game using Wine does not mean there is a problem with the graphics drivers. There is likely a problem with the game software's interaction with the operating system.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Your Intel graphics drivers are installed and loaded, but it appears you installed the oibaf-ppa which is known to cause problems.

I don't game so I can not help with the specific game issue, but I suggest removing that PPA. Did you take a Timeshift snapshot of your system before installing it? I always recommend take a snapshot before installing a PPA. You can try removing it, but sometimes it does not remove properly.

There is also no reason for you to have installed the below repo. Not only are Intel graphics drivers in the kernel and load automatically, you are not running focal (you are running jammy) so you should not be using a focal repository. I suggest removing it and whatever you installed from it as well.

So. Are you telling me that i need to remove that PPA from the file "additional-repositores.list" and the games will work? I don't remember adding that PPA, so i don't know how was it added.

I'm saying you added two PPAs and I am not aware that either one is needed to run the games and they might be causing problems with the games.

There is a package in the Ubuntu Universe repos named ppa-purge which will remove that PPA repository and replace all the packages that it installed with the default versions from the normal repos.

I have only bothered to install and use it once, and that was many years ago, so I'm not able to remember the command that you use to do the removal/replacement job, but it did work faultlessly.

I do not use Wine, but I suspect you will have to provide more details so those that use Wine can help you. What version of Wine did you install?
What is the specific games you are trying to run?

And i try to run any game that requires DirectX to work (Chocolate Doom, GTA San Andreas, Mame32) but all of those games doesn't launch, or like the Sega Dreamcast example that i mentioned, the game runs but with graphical glitches

The changes from the oibaf-ppa are still there. Removing the PPA does not remove the changes the PPA already made to your system.

Maybe something in this tutorial will help you remove it Get rid of a system-wide, deep intervening PPA, without reinstalling OS. If not, re-installing will be the only way to clear it from your computer.

I just checked and that is a development release version. I think you want to be using a stable version (8.0.1 is the latest) and not a development version.

OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel HD Graphics (BYT)
v: 4.2 Mesa 23.2.0-devel (git-264cf37 2023-05-27 jammy-oibaf-ppa)
The changes from the oibaf-ppa are still there. Removing the PPA does not remove the changes the PPA already made to your system.

Maybe something in this tutorial will help you remove it Get rid of a system-wide, deep intervening PPA, without reinstalling OS. If not, re-installing will be the only way to clear it from your computer.

wine-8.9
I just checked and that is a development release version. I think you want to be using a stable version (8.0.1 is the latest) and not a development version.
This seems the ideal opportunity to try ppa-purge that I mentioned above which will replace you current graphic driver with the OS default version.
I can't promise that this will solve your problem but it's worth trying.
