Very slow boot up on Dell T5500 desktop

Post by Frank 500 »

Hi everyone, I have a problem with my recently installed Linux Mint whereby it takes a very long time to boot up - about 4 to 5 minutes all up. It has been doing this since I first installed it.

After the BIOS messages are complete, which themselves actually are a little slow compared to my other PCs, there is a black screen with nothing happening for about 2.5 minutes, then all the boot messaging starts (I have set it to verbose boot up) and it takes another 1.5 minutes or so to complete.

I hope someone can suggest some clues as to what the problem is, below I have pasted details that are probably helpful, please let me know if you need any other details. Thanks very much in advance.

That last value seems to match approximately with the operating system start-up you posted.

It sounds like your system is slow for the initial post (before the operating system starts). That is usually a hardware-related issue and not someone over which the operating system has control.

If this is the correct link Dell Precision T5500 System BIOS the last BIOS for your computer appears to be A18. It appears your system was never updated and some of the listed updates do mention hardware components. It might help if you have a way to update it.

It's also possible one of your drives might be causing the slow down. I don't know what verbose mode checks to know what might be the issue.

Thanks very much for your suggestions, I will start by trying to update the BIOS.

I really didn't suspect anything hardware/BIOS related because the machine used to have Windows installed which booted with no issues whatsoever. I just put in a new 2T hard disk and did a fresh install of Mint.

Just recently it started getting 110 USB errors on bootup so I'll have to try booting it with no peripherals and work from there as that's adding to my bootup woes now.

Thanks again!
