Firefox upgrades or something is loosing my Dictionary words

Post by AZgl1800 »

I haunt the same forums consistently.

I add words to the Dictionary on each forum, two things bug me badly

1) the same Word is treated as a "new word" when I visit a different forum.

2) when Firefox or other updates are done, those "added words" get lost.

Extremely frustrating on my M/C forum, which I am the Admin of for the past 29 years.
I use the same terms all the time, and those words keep getting lost.

What's MC forum? What software does it use?
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.

M/C to us folks means a motorcycle,
the one in particular is www.GoldwingFacts.com
and it uses Xenforo

The Fora platform includes forum software by XenForo.
goldwingfacts.com is an independent Honda enthusiast website owned and operated by VerticalScope Inc. Content on goldwingfacts.com is generated by its users. goldwingfacts.com is not in any way affiliated with Honda Motor Company

What is Dictionary?
when you are a Text Editor, like on this forum, and you miss spell a word, the browser's internal Check Spelling feature will underline bad words.

my issue, is I enter a correct Word, and then click ADD TO Dictionary....
it should stay forever, but they don't

AND, it has to be done for every website....
the Spell Check should be a Once and forget it thing...
it is stupid to have to re-enter FASTER in 14 different websites.

"FASTER" is just a demo 'word' that entered once ought to be it, once and forever

Try

1. Run FF
2. Add "new" words to dictionary
3. Open FF profile folder
4. Find persdict.dat file and make it read only
5. Restart FF

I have no clue as to when all the other versions of hunspell showed up.
If I were to guess, it is a Hold Over from doing an Upgrade from 20.3 to 21 beta, I did not do a Fresh Install, just the upgrade.

1) Hm, seems you can not see Hidden Files (they have dot before name)
.mozilla - example hidden folder
Try to
>>> Go to your Home folder
>>> Mouse Right Click
>>> Check "Show Hidden Files"

2) This because FF every time do not know what language to use for spelling.
You have five english languages. What FF must think about it?
You have many other langauges. Russian, German, Italian, French... I do not think about updates, some of your programs installed them.
I have only one english lang and only one version of it = En-Us
Try to
>>> Go to Synaptic
>>> Search for hunspell dictionary
>>> Live only one En-Us version

Thank you for taking so much time, and adding a lot of Detail for me.
I will be Archiving this entire thread in my Notebook....

80 summers have passed for me, and 15 years ago, a Semi truck merged my motorcycle and me into a brick wall..... that destroyed my Short Term Memory, and keeps me from remembering things others never forget.... :|

if I don't write it down, it is lost within 15 minutes.

the list is much shorter now, do I need the other spell application, aspell/ ?

Code: Select all

to be honest, I don't know yet,
I have only looked at this forum a couple of times.
I am visiting with Family out of state, and that does not allow me to muck around with my laptop.

test:
worrd ( shows underline so it is incorrect )
Baad ( shows underline so it is incorrect )

at the moment, I can't think of a "real word" that I need to enter and then check to see if it shows as a correction...

ah, yes, GoldwingFacts ( which is the name of my M/C forum, I will enter that )
now miss-spell it goldwingfacts ( it is showing miss-spelled )

now I will see if it offers the correct spelling, nope, just offers to ADD it to the Dictionary.

that is my Big Irk with Hunspell, it does NOT use my Added Words as a solution to a miss-spelled word

I copied your words to my dictionary persdict.dat. And all works.

There are not worrd and Baad in your dictionary. They underlined.

What about GoldwingFacts. It works!
GoldwingFacts - Ok because it is in Dictionary
goldwingfacts - underlined miss-spelled because it is not in Dictionary

GoldwingFacts is not goldwingfacts

p.s.
English - Ok, because it is in system dictionary
english - underlined, does not in system dictionary

Linux spelling is case sensitive by default!
You have to add all variation off your words to your dictionary.
Maybe there is a way to set case independence? I do not know.

I agree with the above,

the major Irk that I have, is that not one of my ADDED words is ever used as a Possible Correction to a miss-spelled word.

that sloppy old girl, MS Word will do that for me...

PS: I am not looking for Case Independence, that would defeat the purpose of Spell Check.
what I want, is for it to recognize a lowercase word and suggest the correct Upper/Lower case solution.

Hm, I tried to copy your words to system hunspell dictionaries /usr/share/hunspell/en_US.dic
And test suggestions for them, for example Amana

Code: Select all

sudo apt install hunspell

Code: Select all

echo "Amana" | hunspell
Hunspell 1.7.0
*

Code: Select all

echo "amana" | hunspell
Hunspell 1.7.0
& amana 5 0: Amana, manana, manna, panama, man
For amana suggestion is Amana.
It correct, but this is only in command line in system.
Firefox does not see them.
This means that FF uses a built-in copy of hunspell, not the system one.
I can not filnd FF built-in english dictionary to try to copy word in it.

I find

1. Install additional dictionary, for example
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... ictionary/

2. Find it in extension folder in profile
/home/[YOUR NAME]/.mozilla/firefox/[PROFILE]/extensions/en-US-mozilla@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org.xpi

3. Open it and open dictionary en-US.dic

4. Copy your words in it and save.

5. Restart FF

Re: Firefox upgrades or something is loosing my Dictionary words

Post by AZgl1800 »

AH,
you are one Deeply Serious Dude....

I will go put my words in the Mozzila dictionary in a bit, and love it if they show up like I want them too.

if they do, I will create a shortcut to the Dictionary, so that it is easier to find and edit.
