Microphone is detected as if it were a speaker.

Post by GPhilips »

Microphone is detected as if it were a speaker.
It is a microphone with a 3.5mm jack pin

I tried using HDAJackRetask but didn't manage to make it work

Is this a laptop or desktop?
Perhaps the mic is plugged into the wrong port?

If you look at my tagline I show the command for listing your hardware. Could you post the output so I (and others) can see your hardware profile?

Ok, This is the Debian edition of LM.

I find Debian a great operating system for servers. For a multimedia computer - not so much. There are rough points in debian concerning multimedia and this is one of them. Do not misunderstand me, LMDE is great but has some rough points is all I am saying.

I have not ever used LMDE or played around with it. I do see its using the ALSA sound system and not pulseaudio. While its certainly possible to fix your problem I may not be the one to really help you with it. However, Posting your hardware profile is very important and will hopefully draw help from others soon as they can now see your hardware.

sudo apt install pavucontrol (PulseAudio mixer)

Switch to "configuration" tab find the the "built-in audio" you want to turn into a mic and change its profile.
I bet "Analog Stereo Duplex" will let your system automatically sense output/input devices.
"Analog Stereo Input" will use the port only for mic-in.

These combined plugs have a fourth ring to connect the microphone.
If you plug in only a microphone, having a jack with only two or three rings, it will electrically connect to the headphone amplifier output which cannot work.
In this case you would have to acquire an adapter which splits the combined plug into two separate sockets.
