LM21: Power supply and monitor via Lenovo docking station randomly not working

I'm using Linux Mint 21, Cinnamon, Kernel: 5.19.0-42-generic, and I would like to use the Lenovo docking station (Lenovo ThinkPad Universal USB-C Smart Dock-EU) for power supply and connecting peripheral device (monitor, etc.).


Sometimes this works just fine. That means, that connecting the docking station via USB-C to the laptop (T14s) power supply and my monitor (Lenovo) over HDMI (connected to the docking station) works fine.

Randomly, the monitor stays black and power supply doesn't work. In that case I have to use the normal power cable and I've to plug in the monitor directly to the notebook. Sometimes, when connecting the docking station, Linux recognises the monitor, i.e. the monitor shows a normal background image before turning black in 2 sec.
It's worth noticing, that every other device connected to the docking station (keyboard, mouse, headphones) works fine – also when the monitor and power supply over the docking station are not working.

Sometimes it helped to cut power supply of the docking station completely and unplug the docking from the notebook, wait a minute before putting it back together.

This problem is very annoying and I hope someone can help me with that issue.

This sounds like an issue with either the docking station or the cable/port to which the docking station connects to the laptop. A monitor needs more bandwidth/throughput than a mouse or headphones does and HDMI connections are especially senstive with regards to needing really secure connections.

I went to check and see if you were running the most recent BIOS/UEFI for your computer and found a red box at the top of the page which says:
Please update your BIOS to the latest version, as Lenovo has released critical BIOS updates for selected ThinkPad systems to prevent charging issues with some USB-C power device configurations. If you are not sure about this, please run Automatic Update to proceed.
It's my understanding that dock connects to the laptop through USB-C so I would think that note applies to your situation.

If that is the correct link, the latest version is 1.55 so it appears your system is missing quite a few updates. I suggest updating.

I do not have personal experience with either of those. I know a number of people here on the forum have had success using the LVFS methodolgy in the first link (presuming it applies to your specific model computer-LVFS is not available for all models).

I know some people have been able to use the FreeDOS/usb method in the second link, but I don't recall those being Lenovos. (I recall them being Dell computers.)

Did you check the Lenovo website to see what they offer? If this is the correct link BIOS Update (Utility & Bootable CD) for Windows 11, 10 (64-bit), Linux - ThinkPad P14s Gen 2, P15s Gen 2, T14 Gen 2, T15 Gen 2, I see both a bootable CD and a Linux Update utility. The readme for the update utility has directions in it.

Additionally, Lenovo has a community forum. If you have questions about updating, I suggest checking it or asking there.
