Disk space is slowly running out [SOLVED]

Post by sugarfree »

Hello,

I have installed mint 21 in december. That time i created partition for file system with 72 GB. Installed some aps and thats it.
I had available disk space around 30gb. Im just internet user, but i have now just 1gb available free space left?
I have also stacer installed but can't free more space. My pc is regularly updated but i don't know if old software files are deleted with stacer or not?

Use the disk usage analyzer to find out where the space is going, post a screenshot. Note it takes some time to analyse the system, like go and have a coffee. The usual culprits are timeshift snapshots (if using it with the defaults) or something spamming your logs (in /var/log).

run the following terminal commands individually and post their results individually please. each time you highlight and copy the results of each command, come back here click that </> button above ( ...5th from the left under Subject ). then hold ctrl and press v to paste ( that way you're not trying fight to aim perfectly with the mouse cursor ;) )

sudo parted --list

df -h

inxi -Fxxxmprz

Did I understand correctly that you said Timeshift snapshots that you create are being targeted to another partition? If so how many snapshots have been created? ( this should be viewable within the Timeshift gui aka Timeshift-gtk command also )

Usually when someone reports about being low on disk space here...it's often been one of two or both things.

1. Timeshift snapshots filling up /run/Timeshift ( still in root directory though aka / )
2. Too many Linux kernels

Lets see your reply :)

Well, my system size is not dissimilar to yours (62GB) but over 50 % of mine is actually in /Home & in user data that I understand why it is there.

Your boot folder is way too big & that suggests that you have old, unwanted kernels still installed.
Go to Update Manager - View - Linux Kernels - Remove Kernels.
That will allow you to get rid of all but the last two - all anybody should ever need.
(Although this method might not work if you are installing kernels from elsewhere than through Mint)

Your usr is also nearly 30GB while mine is only 13GB. I am not knowledgable enough to know how to manually effect that Folder as it contains most of the files, libraries, programs, and system utilities but it is where most of your space is disappearing.

Removing Kernels is only going to buy you 6GB at the most, which is still going to leave you tight for space..

If you can't crack the usr Folder size then increasing the space given to Mint might be your only answer..

I would also run sudo apt-get clean to do away with cached Debian packages. Do you have a lot of flatpaks installed? I hear they take up a lot of space, which might be in '/usr'. It's sort of by design, due to each flatpak containing all the dependencies for whatever it is.

Please also share the output of this, ideally between

tags:

Code: Select all

find /usr -type f -size +10M -printf '%s %p\n' | sort -nrk 1 | numfmt --to=iec --field=1 | head -n 40
This should tell us straight away if there are any huge files in '/usr'. It won't account for crazy amounts of tiny files, though.
I'm also Terminalforlife on GitHub.

i run sudo apt-get clean and nothing happens.I saw that in /usr/lib is 19,4 GB files but when i opened the largest map is only3GB

According to that list totalling ~3.1G, there doesn't seem to be anything alarming. Could be a ridiculous number of smaller files, but first I'd run the find part as 'root':

Code: Select all

sudo find /usr -type f -size +10M -printf '%s %p\n' | sort -nrk 1 | numfmt --to=iec --field=1 | head -n 40
Hopefully that'll catch whatever might be hiding behind 'root' privileges.

BTW, in Linux, more often than not, if nothing appears to happen on the terminal, then it was likely a success. In this case, sudo apt-get clean shouldn't output anything unless it failed. The cache was in all likelihood successfully obliterated, which hopefully saved some space, albeit perhaps not a lot.
I'm also Terminalforlife on GitHub.

sugarfree....I'm definitely happy to read that you're back up and running.

Please consider as soon as you can ..getting a bigger drive and ensuring it's at least a decent sata ssd ( such as a samsung 860 or 870 evo or any of the crucial sata ssds) of much bigger size so you severely cut your chances of encountering this problem again. When you do get one of these ssd's, by that time it would probably be best to install LM Cinnamon fresh into it, and just copy over your data files and reset up your stuff ( reinstall programs, change whatever applicable settings to what you prefer...etc)

I'll be happy to walk you through some tips and ideas as I'm sure plenty of others here can be of just as great help.

IF your problem has now been resolved, please go back to your first post here in the Subject: part add something like [ Solved ] so that others know you no longer require help on this without them having to click on this post.

Cheers :D

yes i know, my pc is 15 years old. Only upgrade was 250gb SSD disk. And in december i was finaly managed to escape windows :)
So Linux is still new for me, although I have tested quite a few of them but cinnamon is for this PC just great.
Thank you for your help :D
