Lenovo Slim 7i 14IRP8 almost fully working except for the High refresh rate

Post by niko_3100 »

Hello I have been using this laptop which is a really new model: Lenovo Slim 7i 14IRP8 with I5-1340p and 2.8k 120hz Display panel and so far so good. Laptop runs 95% of the hadware with Linux Mint 21.1 and Kerenl 6.3.3-6.3.4 (using Mainline).
The only thing missing is to be able to recognize the 120hz refresh rate and be able to choose it or not. Could you please help me? I have tried different Kernels without any luck. Not sure if creating a new profile will do the trick but in any case this is the full xrandr for some help. Thank you so much!

Please give us information about your install by entering this command in a terminal:

Code: Select all

This will let us know how Mint sees your hardware. Refresh rates are usually a function of the hardware and the graphics driver. It is not something Linux Mint sets.

Code: Select all

  2880x1800 (0x49) 347.660MHz -HSync -VSync *current +preferred
        h: width 2880 start 2928 end 2960 total 3040 skew 0 clock 114.36KHz
        v: height 1800 start 1803 end 1809 total 1906 clock 60.00Hz
When reading xrandr output, *= current resolution and += preferred resolution. Usually, when both are showing in the output, as they are in your case, it is not possible to get something different.

You are already using the newest kernel available (which means you have the newest Intel graphics driver). I do not know what might be the factor in your hardware that a different refresh rate is not seen. Generally speaking, rates higher than 60 Hz are possible, but it depends on the hardware whether or not that happens.

I have doubts it would work, but you could try using xrandr to see if might work. Run the following in a terminal

Code: Select all

cvt 2880 1800 120
The command will return with a modeline. For example, here is what that command returned on my laptop.

Code: Select all

cvt 2880 1800 120
# 2880x1800 119.96 Hz (CVT) hsync: 231.65 kHz; pclk: 934.00 MHz
Modeline "2880x1800_120.00" 934.00 2880 3136 3456 4032 1800 1803 1809 1931 -hsync +vsync
You now want to run each of the following three lines one at a time. You will substitute the Modeline information you get in the lines. I just used what I got for the following example.

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "2880x1800_120.00" 934.00 2880 3136 3456 4032 1800 1803 1809 1931 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode eDP-1 "2880x1800_120.00"
xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode "2880x1800_120.00"
After you run the third line, if the screen goes blank and returns to its current refresh rate, then it did not work.

Hey Thank you so much for your help. Unfortunately it did not work but I learned some good stuff with those command lines.
This is not a deal breaker to me as all the drivers and everything runs amazing it is just not ideal to have a 120hz panel and not be able to get that smoothness =(
I had the Intel 11gen mode of the same laptop and Mint 20.3 (at that moment) was able to recognize the 90hz panel. Anyways! I may need to wait a little longer to get the proper drivers..

This info is extracted from the xrandr --verbose output:
Monitor ranges (Bare Limits): 40-120 Hz V, 229-229 kHz H, max dotclock 700 MHz
A standard modeline using cvt has a 934 MHz dot clock, which is too high:
Modeline "2880x1800_120.00" 934.00 2880 3136 3456 4032 1800 1803 1809 1931 -hsync +vsync
The info for a reduced blanking mode is also listed, which has a 695.31 MHz dot clock:

Code: Select all

Video Timing Modes Type 1 - Detailed Timings Data Block:
    DTD: 2880x1800 120.000 Hz 16:10 228.720 kHz 695.310 MHz (aspect 16:10, no 3D stereo)
               Hfront 48 Hsync 32 Hback 80 Hpol N
               Vfront 3 Vsync 6 Vback 97 Vpol N
Creating a modeline with that info:

Code: Select all

Modeline "2880x1800x120" 695.31 2880 2928 2960 3040 1800 1803 1809 1906 +HSync -VSync
So try using these commands:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "2880x1800x120" 695.31 2880 2928 2960 3040 1800 1803 1809 1906 +HSync -VSync
xrandr --addmode eDP-1 2880x1800x120.00
xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 2880x1800x120.00
If that fails, then try using a 100 Hz refresh rate:

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "2880x1800x99.97" 573.50 2880 2928 2960 3040 1800 1803 1807 1887 +HSync -VSync
xrandr --addmode eDP-1 2880x1800x99.97
xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 2880x1800x99.97
If that fails, then try changing the maximum bpc (bits per channel) of the video signal from the default value of 12 bpc to 6: xrandr --output eDP-1 --set "max bpc" 6

Then try using the xrandr commands for 120 & 100 refresh rates again.

Hey thank you for your help but it does not work. I am a bit resigned to get at least 90hz... =(

Try to set the scaling mode from Full aspect to Full (see xrandr --verbose output):
xrandr --output eDP1 --set "scaling mode" "Full"

Then try using the xrandr commands again for 120 & 100 Hz refresh rates.

If that fails, then try using a 90 Hz refresh rate. This is for a reduced blanking mode: umc 2880 1800 90 --rbt

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "2880x1800x89.99" 513.75 2880 2928 2960 3040 1800 1803 1807 1878 +HSync -VSync
xrandr --addmode eDP-1 2880x1800x89.99
xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 2880x1800x89.99

Also try a standard mode: cvt 2880 1800 90

Code: Select all

xrandr --newmode "2880x1800_90.00" 682.75 2880 3128 3440 4000 1800 1803 1809 1897 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode eDP-1 2880x1800_90.00
xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 2880x1800_90.00

xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 2880x1800_90.00
nope... in all the cases I got this:

Code: Select all

xrandr: Configure crtc 0 failed
I believe I give up... 60hz for me till new Big Kernel release...

There is one other method you can try but it's more complicated, which involves creating and testing a custom EDID for the laptop's display panel.

If you don't want to pursue this, then you don't need to reply.

You have different hardware. Please post your system information in your topic. Some people have been able to get the proper refresh rates by just upgrading to a newer kernel so making xrandr changes may not be needed on your computer. We will not know that until you post your system information.
