Hello.
I upgraded Mint from version 20.3 to 21 "Vanessa". Two of my hard disks got changed names.
dev/sda1 has two partitions which formerly was named Disk-2 and Disk 2.1. When I look at properties in the file explorer Nemo they have got the names Disk-21 and Disk-2.11 respectively.
dev/sdb1 has one partition which formerly was named Disk-3. When I look at properties in the file explorer Nemo it has got the name Disk-31.
Disk-2 and Disk-3 have the file system ntfs, while Disk 2.1 has ext4.
However, in the directory tree to the left in the file explorer, and on the desktop, they appear with their original names.
When I look in the file explorer under File system/media/gunnar there are entries with both the original and the new names. The new names are accessible, but not the originals.
When I look in GParted the partitions appear with their original names.
How can I change back to the original names?
I use Cinnamon.
I would be grateful for some help.
With best regards
Gunnar Jonsson

Re: Hard disks changed names when upgrading
This has happened to me, from time to time, with attached drives.
What I do is to go to media - your name & then right mouse click, open as root.
This will allow you to delete the drives without the added 1.
Now, close your machine & restart.
Disks will have reverted back to their original names..

Those are the ones op wants to keep--This will allow you to delete the drives without the added 1.
op wants to revert to the original mount points as I read it

Re: Hard disks changed names when upgrading
NO!!
The original disk name has, somehow, been "frozen" by the system.
So when you try & add a disk with that name the system adds the number 1 so it can use it.
The disks with the original name do not actually exist.
By deleting them (you need to be root to do that) when you then re-start the system it will accept the disk name, without any need to add a 1.

Re: Hard disks changed names when upgrading
I see. Good to know about this. I was thinking the partitions may have been remounted in fstab with the extra1 in
the mountpoints, and if so If so both mountpoints would still be in the /media/username
directory as op reported.

I am not sure how to open as root. I do not get that option when i click the right mouse button.
Can you explain, please.

Re: Hard disks changed names when upgrading
This is what it looks like in Cinnamon/Nemo - if you are using a different desktop, then sorry, I do not know..
Nemo - Edit - Preferences
and add it..
If you are using Cinnamon/Nemo & still don't have it then you need to open Nemo - Edit - Preferences
and add it..
Re: Hard disks changed names when upgrading
Gunnar, if the File Manager method isn't working for you - and, by all means, try it first - please report the output of
ls -l /media/$USER
. With that information, one of us can give you the appropriate terminal commands to remove the "ghost" folders.Re: Hard disks changed names when upgrading
It worked!
The mistake I made was to right mouse click in the directory tree to the left. Ones I clicked in the right part of the window I was able to open as root, and to delete the entries.
So now the disc names are back to what they were before, and everything is correct.
I want to thank all of you for your help. It is good to know that help is available when needed. Thank you all!!
