Re: Endless [Wi-fi Network Authentication Required]

Post by aq74i »

It was less direct and I ended up on a bunch of other sites looking for answers as well, but iirc, the bread trail was essentially something like this (1 to 2, then 3). I tried all the stuff over there before eventually ending up here at the mint forums.

According to
https://support.apple.com/kb/SP749?view ... cale=ja_JP
https://support.apple.com/kb/SP748?view ... cale=ja_JP
the wireless specs of this 13,2 model and the 13,3 model are both the same:
802.11ac Wi-Fi wireless networking; IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n compatible
though the other specs look a bit different. Am not sure if this information is helpful or not, so just included the links in case.

Also, last night/this morning, I wiped everything as much as possible, then reinstalled mint from the flash drive.
(Context: Had previously installed it on a partition beside macos. There was a lack of space, and I was wondering if macos existing on the same computer, albeit different partition, had an effect on function in mint.)
If I ought to redo all the steps we worked though, like changing the kernel and reinstalling the script, please let me know.
Thank you again for all the suggestions and being so patient!

Re: Endless [Wi-fi Network Authentication Required]

Post by aq74i »

Sorry for the upcoming long, text-y post. Typed it out as things happened, but didn't want to accidentally omit anything potentially helpful. I underlined the section with all the steps I took just in case it's useful.

I just rebooted after following kernel manager's call to update kernel version,

Code: Select all

~$ uname -r
5.15.0-73-generic
and noticed that there was no "you are disconnected" pop-up for "authentication required",
though there was one this morning when I booted up the machine after the clean install of mint.
It's a bit of a weak signal and connection compared to ethernet cable, but I think the wi-fi is working now!

Am going to unplug the ethernet cable and run a speedtest.

Code: Select all

$ speedtest
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from NTT (153.231.3.157)...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Selecting best server based on ping...
Hosted by i3D.net (Tokyo) [347.48 km]: 38.068 ms
Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 25.91 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed......................................................................................................
Upload: 12.87 Mbit/s
It's working, I think!!
Am not sure if any of the following things helped, so am just going to list everything I remember.
Booted into recovery mode, went into the Linux Mint installer, did manual partitions according to https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu-li ... artitions/ , while deleting everything on the machine that I could, then did a clean install of mint.
This morning, before updating the kernel,
I followed Driver Updates and System Updates, updating whatever came up, and rebooted.
I went to Input Methods, to install Japanese language input, changed the input method framework to Fcitx, and rebooted.
I went to Language Settings, and changed
Language to English, Ireland
Region to Japanese, Japan
Time format to Japanese, Japan
and then clicked on Apply System-Wide, and I think I rebooted after that as well.
I didn't install anything else, nor use any programs apart from Firefox and Thunderbird.

Also, whilst typing this post, was trying to google in an attempt to remember what Language Settings was called, and the internet wasn't working despite zero new notifications for disconnection or anything. I ran a speedtest, which gave me this.

Code: Select all

$ speedtest
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Cannot retrieve speedtest configuration
ERROR: <urlopen error [Errno -2] Name or service not known>
After a bit of waiting and retrying (maybe 4 minutes?), the wi-fi is back up again. I can google "potato" and it gives me potato within a few seconds. Ran a speedtest to check and there seems to be a change (hosted by..., and also upload speed has overtaken download speed)? Am not sure if it's significant or not.

Code: Select all

:~$ speedtest

Sorry for the long text, thank you for reading.

Sorry, tried to submit the post but the internet failed again. Thankfully, CrtlA+Ced just in case. It might return in a few minutes. Meanwhile, ran a speedtest and got a similar result.

Code: Select all

~$ speedtest
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Cannot retrieve speedtest configuration
ERROR: <urlopen error [Errno -2] Name or service not known>
Just tried sticking the ethernet cable via adapter back in to the USB port, but it's not registering in the Network Manager applet. Wifi just returned after about 6ish minutes. Googling potato took twice or thrice as long.
Ran another speedtest. It's switched back to Tokyo from Tsukaba. Could it be that this switching is the cause for these periods of zero connection?

Code: Select all

$ speedtest
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from NTT (153.231.3.157)...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Selecting best server based on ping...

Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 44.48 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed......................................................................................................
Upload: 84.75 Mbit/s

Will reboot and brb.

Rebooted, am back. Wired connection is going, and wifi seems to still be working. There is a good connection, though likely due to ethernet.

Code: Select all

~$ speedtest
Retrieving speedtest.net configuration...
Testing from NTT (153.231.3.157)...
Retrieving speedtest.net server list...
Selecting best server based on ping...
Hosted by i3D.net (Tokyo) [347.48 km]: 27.514 ms
Testing download speed................................................................................
Download: 85.05 Mbit/s
Testing upload speed......................................................................................................
Upload: 95.43 Mbit/s

Does this mean the issue is solved? I honestly don't know.
Assuming everything stays the way it has been for the past hour, there is now wifi, though it periodically stops and starts again.

update: Rebooted while trying and failing to get Japanese input to work. Wifi stopped connecting. There are no more authentication required pop-ups, and the connection applet says "connecting" for a longer period of time, but it results in failure to connect.
Didn't run anything in terminal or do anything significant.

The new notification reads:
"Connection failed"
"Activation of network connection failed"

Sorry, I don't know how to code and am not sure how to fix it. Tried putting sudo in front when it said permission denied.
~$ for a in /sys/kernel/debug/brcmfmac/*/revinfo; do echo "\"$a\""; cat "$a"; done
"/sys/kernel/debug/brcmfmac/*/revinfo"
cat: '/sys/kernel/debug/brcmfmac/*/revinfo': Permission denied

~$ sudo for a in /sys/kernel/debug/brcmfmac/*/revinfo; do echo "\"$a\""; cat "$a"; done
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `do'
This is a screenshot of the folder it was in. Because I did a clean reinstall of Mint, I don't have that file anymore.
https://pasteboard.co/GXwUbM65GaOx.png

I went to download it again, but this time I didn't put it in the lib>firmware>brcm folder.
These are the contents. Previously, I'd changed the values
「ccode」and「regrev」 to 0 or 1 according to the forum, and rebooted each time to see if the wifi would work.
I also used ip link, to find the mac address, which I put into 「macaddr」, replacing xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

Code: Select all

Try this

Code: Select all

sudo -i
for a in /sys/kernel/debug/brcmfmac/*/revinfo; do echo "\"$a\""; cat "$a"; done
Copy the info, then exit

Sorry for the late reply.

I pasted into terminal and hit enter, and it asked me for the password which I entered, but nothing appeared in the terminal, except that there's root@ before userid now.
Is the info in a folder somewhere?
Sorry, I don't know where to find it.

Edit: I just tried to close the terminal but it says
"Close this terminal?"
"There is still a process running in this terminal. Closing it will kill it."
Though it's already been about forty minutes and nothing has appeared in the terminal.

Another edit:
Did nothing print out because I don't have that file since this is a fresh install of Mint?

Code: Select all

aqsy@aqsy-melon13:~$ sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/brcmfmac.conf
[sudo] password for aqsy:
rm: cannot remove '/etc/modprobe.d/brcmfmac.conf': No such file or directory
Will reboot now then edit this post.

Code: Select all

aqsy@aqsy-melon13:~$ sudo ls /sys/kernel/debug/brcmfmac/
[sudo] password for aqsy:
ls: cannot access '/sys/kernel/debug/brcmfmac/': No such file or directory

A small update

Post by aq74i »

Today I got a usb wifi adapter (tp-link Artcher T3U Nano), followed instructions from https://github.com/morrownr/88x2bu-20210702 and viewtopic.php?t=391449, and am now posting from what seems to be a stable, working wifi connection.

The issue wasn't resolved, and if anyone using a MBP13,2 is reading this, there may not be an internal fix available at the present moment. However, external fixes such as ethernet and wifi adapters seem to work.

Thank you everyone for all the help and support!
(Especially JeremyB who was so patient with someone who didn't even know code had to be pasted into the terminal line by line)

Thank you.
