Recently upgraded from LM19.3 to 21.1
Previously, when I plugged in a headset or ear buds the sound would play through the ear buds exclusively and not at all through the speaker, but now it plays through both, although the speaker is at a lower volume. How can I restore the previous situation?

Re: Sound Plays Through Speaker and Headphones Simultaneously
1 Is your pair of headphones/headset or ear buds physically plugged into a 3.5 mm audio jack provided by your desktop speakers?Previously, when I plugged in a headset or ear buds the sound would play through the ear buds exclusively and not at all through the speaker, but now it plays through both, although the speaker is at a lower volume. How can I restore the previous situation?
Or
2. Is your headphones/headset/earbuds physically plugged into a splitter adapter ( has one male 3.5mm jack on opposite end of the adapter... that plugs into your PC's sound correct port and the ) and your speakers are plugged into the other available female 3.5mm audio jack?

My ear buds are physically plugged into the audio jack on my Dell laptop.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

Re: Sound Plays Through Speaker and Headphones Simultaneously
Was it a fresh install of LM21.1 or an in-place upgrade through all the steps?
Does this also happen with the live session of LM21.1?
Do you know if there are any newer UEFI's available?

Yes, it was it a fresh install of LM21.1 from a USB.
Don't know what you mean by "the live session of LM21.1"
Do not know if there are any newer UEFI's available.

Re: Sound Plays Through Speaker and Headphones Simultaneously
A live session is when you boot the installation usb and test it out.
I checked the Dell website, but the BIOS/UEFI numbering I found was different from what you have so I don't know that I had the correct info. You would have the computer specifics to be able to check.

Re: Sound Plays Through Speaker and Headphones Simultaneously
Thanks for your help SMG; I'm presently away from home and don't have the installation USB with me so I won't be able to test it until I get home in about 10 days.
In the meantime I will look at the Dell website and see if I can figure out anything about the BIOS/UEFI numbering.
I did try out a headset with a USB connection and found that if I pushed it in real hard, the speaker sound became muted, so that might be a work around if I can't solve this problem.

This also might mean there is a physical issue with your headphone port.investdude wrote: ⤴Mon Jun 05, 2023 9:33 amI did try out a headset with a USB connection and found that if I pushed it in real hard, the speaker sound became muted, so that might be a work around if I can't solve this problem.
I have a laptop a generation older than yours and after removing the headphone jack, the speaker stopped working. Sound still came through the headphones (when I plugged them back in). I tried multiple reboots to see if the speakers would work again and gave up and decided to just be happy the headphones worked. Then one day for no reason at all I heard a sound when I plugged in a usb into that laptop. Just like that the speakers started working again.
