[solved] Error while updating Kernel

Post by TaterChip »

I had updates available in the update manager so I decided to install after running timeshift. I attempted to install the kernel last and by itself. I ended up with the following error message.

Code: Select all

E: /tmp/apt-dpkg-install-GiEMqS/0-linux-modules-5.15.0-73-generic_5.15.0-73.80_amd64.deb: cannot copy extracted data for './boot/System.map-5.15.0-73-generic' to '/boot/System.map-5.15.0-73-generic.dpkg-new': failed to write (No space left on device)

When I clicked on details it also gave me this....

Re: Error while updating Kernel

Post by Knightstmplr1 »

From my read of this problem, you have too many kernels still installed that is taking up all the room in your boot device, the message you got at the end of the first message you posted had this to say at the end of message.
failed to write (No space left on device)
(No space left on device)
You need to remove the kernels # 71, 70, 69, and 56, before it will let you install the new kernel due to lack of space.

Try to not leave more than the two kernels installed, the one that is active as well as the previous one used in future.

I went to delete the oldest kernel and was greeted with this. What do I do now?

Open your Synaptic Package Manager and on the left side, click on "Custom Filters", then click on "Broken" to view what is broken and follow instructions to fix it.

As a preventive measure i recommend to enable Remove obsolete kernels and dependencies on Update Manager ---> Edit ---> Preferences ---> Automation ---> Automatic Maintenance
