My keyboard went ballistic on me (SOLVED)

Post by kresica42 »

Hi! So, last week I installed clean Linux Mint 21.1. on a brand new computer and the operation went without a problem until the first login in the desktop environment (Cinnamon). Some characters in the keyboard were on the opposite side of the board (Logitech MK240).
I scrolled thru the threads with the similar issues in here and the most common suggestion was to reconfigure keyboard settings in the Terminal using command-line:

Code: Select all

 sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
I did that input, then selected the right layout from the menu that opened and left all other options the way they are because I was happy with that. I closed the Terminal and rebooted. Upon logging-in the desktop, some characters in keyboard were still on opposite sides. Since most (but not all) of those characters were specific to my language (Croatian), I scrolled thru threads on this specific topic. The most common fix was to run the commands that corrects the the problem with the locale en_US.utf.8:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales
sudo update-locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8
sudo locale-gen --purge --no-archive
sudo update-initramfs -u -k all
That didn`t fix the problem neither. Now, it`s possible that during this last input I typed the first command twice by mistake. If so, how do I undo that? If not, what`s the next step boss-man?

.

Environment: Linux Mint 21.1 Cinnamon 64-bit Kernel 5.19. 0-43
Desktop: Processor AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 4650g With Radeon Graphics x 6 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Renoir

*Say, my new PC is an configuration assembled for sale by a local retailer: https://www.hgspot.hr/stolno-racunalo-h ... r_id=1333 - what is such PC`s name (as in e. g. Acer xzy, HP so and so, Lenovo..some number, etc.)?

Please post the results of the following command.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Did you select Croatian as your language when you installed? If you did it probably selected the keyboard layout for it also. Try changing the language to english and see what happens. If that fails, then I would do a fresh install and choose the correct language and keyboard layout.

No, that"s not it. During the installation, I selected US keyboard with CROATIAN letters when prompted to adjust keyboard settings as well as in reconfigure keyboard settings later on.

Since the previous post, I followed instructions on first steps, tips and tweaks and avoiding mistakes in Linux Mint: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... amon.html and some simpler instructions on security and privacy from here: viewtopic.php?t=397740

I"ll try to avoid fresh reinstall if possible. After a lifetime of torment under Windows, I really dislike notion of having to reinstall anything anymore.

Maybe there"s a way to re-map those characters that switched sides or purge previous commands to reconfigure keyboard and try again or something else?

My keyboard went ballistic on me (SOLVED)

Post by kresica42 »

I forgot to mention, may be of relevance. As I started to reconfigure keyboard settings in Terminal using

Code: Select all

 sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
earlier on, I tried with every offered layoput from the menu that appeared. Output appeared to me the same in every instance:

Code: Select all

kresica@kresica-System-Product-Name:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
[sudo] password for kresica:

Re: My keyboard went ballistic on me (SOLVED)

Post by kresica42 »

These system updates pack some neat sorcery in them. Update Manager prompted me about firmware update few minutes ago. I downloaded the available package fwupd-signed and rebooted.

Upon logging in, I switched from Croatian (US) to Croatian keyboard layout. The shuffled characters returned to theirs original keys. Just like that.

I'll edit this thread as (SOLVED) then. Much obliged!
