[SOLVED] Monitor get become disconnected when Linux Mint recovering from screen inactivity

Post by fliptoback »

Hi everyone,

I was previously using an old Nvidia K2000 card and recently replaced the card with a Gigabyte RX6600 GPU. I am running 4 x monitors - 3 of which are the Dell U2415 1920 x 1200 and 1 of which is the Dell U2311 1920 x 1080. My motherboard is the MSI Mortar with Ryzen 5 5600X and 64GB ram. I am using Linux mint 21.1 with 5.19.0-43-generic kernel. 2 of the monitors are displayports and 2 of which are HDMI.

The GPU is working fine in Linux Mint - but when i leave the PC for say 15mins and come back after the screen inactivity, the following things happen:

1) one of the displayport monitor will become "disconnected" as if it enters into power saving mode. When i run the linux mint display app, it will show that monitor is " disconnected" from the group, but i cannot reenable it unless i switches off the power button to the monitor and then switch it back again.

2) At that time, all the monitors will come back online but the sequence will now be all wrong, as in monitor #2 now becomes monitor #4 and i have to run the "display" app again.

3) The monitors that are displayport connected will change their port number - when i boot the PC fresh, the displayports are displayport-2 and displayport-4 (not sure why), but when the monitors start playing up, it will become say displayports 3 and 7 for instance.

I have tried to do the following:

a) run the xrandr script as follows:
xrandr --output HDMI-A-0 --primary --mode 1920x1080 --pos 5760x120 --output HDMI-A-1 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 3840x0 --output DisplayPort-4 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 1920x0 --output DisplayPort-2 --mode 1920x1200 --pos 0x0
but it always complain the 1920x1200 mode is not found.

b) embed the above script in a xandr script in /lib/systemd/system-sleep folder and make that script executable.

None of the above is working. would greatly appreciate some pointers please.

thanks in advance.

I apologize for omitting one other thing that i have tried:
I have tried to delete the ~/.config/cinnamon-monitors.xml file, then run the "display" app, making sure things are displayed correctly, then press apply so that it will write a new cinnamon-monitors.xml file.

Still not helping with the disconnection issue i am facing....

Welcome to the forum, fliptoback.

Numerous people with RX 6000 GPUs have run into issue related to suspension and resuming with various types of connections across multiple Linux-based distros. It's a graphics driver issue. Switching to a newer kernel series which has a newer amdgpu driver has helped others so hopefully it will help you as well.

You can install the latest 6.1-oem kernel with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04c
and reboot.

Hi SMG,

Thanks for your reply. I have followed your suggestion and now installed the 6.1 OEM kernels - I will report back if this help with the issue. Be back - and thanks again.

Hi SMG,

Now when Linux Mint is trying to resume from the inactivity, the screens become black and no matter what i do I cannot get back the Xwindow environment (tried ctrl-alt-backspace). When i rebooted, it works again but not when the screen is inactive and Linux mint is trying to resume.

I posted the output from inxi here for info - note that for some reasons that is unknown to me - the displayport number changes if i switch off the monitor and turn them back on - for instance it is now DP3 and DP5 - but if i do a fresh reboot it reverts to DP2 and DP4.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I did a search on 6660 in the AMD Issues list and there's a choice of many recent problems. This one from a year ago is still open RX 6600 issue on suspend as is this one RX 6600 XT fails to resume from suspend in 5.15.y series which mentions the fix was in a newer kernel, but then people with even newer kernels said they are still having the issue.

If this is the correct link, Support For MAG B550M MORTAR WIFI:BIOS, it appears your system is missing updates. There are quite a few update to a newer AGESA version. Maybe that will help.

Hi SMG,

Thanks again for replying. Yes that is indeed my motherboard - I will apply those bios updates you mentioned and report back if that helps.

Be back.

Hi SMG,

I have updated the motherboard bios to the latest version. This time when the system is recovering from inactivity, the 2 x HDMI screens are lit, the 2 x DP screens are black - but i also lost all controls on the keyboard (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace also not working) and i have to manually reset the PC.

I have provided the inxi output here. This is the output right after i rebooted - so you can see that the Displayport return back to DP2 and DP4 - at other times when i am resuming from inactivity, the DP port numbers will change. Not sure why.

Any ideas what i could do?

Thanks again

Re: Monitor get become disconnected when Linux Mint recovering from screen inactivity

This time when the system is recovering from inactivity, the 2 x HDMI screens are lit, the 2 x DP screens are black - but i also lost all controls on the keyboard (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace also not working) and i have to manually reset the PC.
Is the keyboard bluetooth? Have you checked to see if updating the BIOS might have reset values so the port being used for your keyboard dongle works properly after resuming from sleep? That's the only idea I have why the keyboard might have worked before, but not now.
fliptoback wrote: Tue Jun 06, 2023 7:12 amThis is the output right after i rebooted - so you can see that the Displayport return back to DP2 and DP4 - at other times when i am resuming from inactivity, the DP port numbers will change. Not sure why.

Any ideas what i could do?
  • Don't put the computer to sleep.
  • Add your concerns to one of the existing bug reports and hope it gets fixed in a newer release.
  • Check to see what happens on a live session of Linux Mint (which uses ext4 instead of btrfs).
  • Try the 6.0-oem kernel to see if it might have a different amdgpu driver version and work differently. You can install the latest 6.0-oem kernel with sudo apt-get install linux-oem-22.04b and reboot.
Does the GPU just have two DP ports and two HDMI ports?

Hi SMG,

Thanks for that. I checked the bios there are no difference in settings for the USB settings - the keyboard is using the Logitech unifying receiver. This morning when i try to resume the PC from sleep overnight, again the keyboard doesnt work and I have to press the power button and it will then come back online.

But that's a small issue that i can live with. The bigger issue remains with the graphics card driver.

I am currently on the 6.1 OEM kernel - would downgrading to the 6.0 OEM kernel not be a backward move?

The GPU has 2 x HDMI and 2 x DP - I have ordered from Amazon yesterday 2 x DP to HDMI cables - so i will test if using HDMI ports on the monitors represent any improvement or not. I will report back.

I will also in parallel try the linux mint live CD and see how it goes.

But overall, i would really still like to allow the PC to go to sleep and resume properly.

Thanks again. will be back with reports.

A lot of people with 6600's have posted on this forum with problems. There was a time when a newer driver did work. I do not recall if that was with the 6.0-oem or the 6.1-oem.

The issue appears to be a driver. If the 6.0-oem provides a driver that works, then, no, it is not a "backward" move. It is the correct move to solve the issue. (Or at least solve it until the newer kernels have the problem fixed.)

In Linux-based distros, newer does not necessarily mean better. You want to use what is the best fit for your hardware.

I don't know how the AMD graphics driver handles the ports to know if that would help or not. I have seen so many people with AMD GPUs that have issues related to the ports that I cannot keep track of what works and what does not. It seems to be different for different model GPUs. It's one of my frustrations when helping people with AMD GPUs. :(

Hi SMG,

I am so glad that the Linux Mint forum is now back online. I am very pleased to say that following the arrival of my DP to HDMI cables, and I then swapped out the DP cables to these DP->HDMI cables, all the issues with Linux Mint's inability to resume, etc are all gone! I dont even need to change the kernel - I am still using the 6.1.0-1013-oem that you suggested earlier.

Everything now works - and I am very pleased.

I would like to give you a sincere thanks once again. Your presence in this forum is indispensable.

Take care SMG!

Good to hear that worked. You are welcome.
