I like Mint very much.
But I am wondering...what would Linux Mint do if Ubuntu quit ?
In other words, why depending on others ?
Just Debian as base seems enough to me.
Even better, a total independent Linux Mint would be a dream come true...

Mint is a customization and expansion beyond Ubuntu (and probably a stabilization over Ubuntu).
What would happen...? Who knows... probably would continue and flourish given it's wide acceptance and useage.

Ubuntu has become unstable junk, and with every new update it breaks something.
Linux Mint is a work of beauty, however it is compromised by the idiotic decisions
implemented by the Ubuntu folk.
I hear that in the future Mint will be based on Debian not Ubuntu
and that will be a good thing.
I ran out of patience with Mint a few days ago and removed it from my PC.
Now I run Debian 5 and have a rather mundane but completely stable system.
I was tempted by opensuse 11.2 which has a very up to date and
beautiful implementation of the KDE desktop but it also has some stability issues.
When all is said and done, stability and security matter more to me than bells and whistles.
I need to know that my data is safe and my PC will always boot up and
not crash in the middle of doing something important.
Just my opinion of course.

My personal, uneducated speculation is, that I would think that it would initially continue under the last-available Ubuntu base, then the Mint team would select another base to move into the future with.JanG wrote:...what would Linux Mint do if Ubuntu quit ?
That would indeed be cool, but I suspect to do so would require more man-hours than the current development team could provide, especially in keeping with the quality & elegance we all enjoy.
