Mint 21.* Release Notes; shutdown timeout is reduced to 10s.

Post by rickNS »

The title appeared in all versions of Mint version 21, repeated in 21.1, 21.2.

What does that mean ?

Because when I in Mate 21.0 (Vanessa) click the Menu button, and select "Quit" I do get this pop up.

With a 60 second countdown timer.

The same in MATE 21.1, and 21.2

In Cinnamon 21.1, and 21.2 When I click Menu, and quit I get basically the same pop up,

With no countdown timer by default, it can be added if you like, but the machine does not shutdown in 10 seconds, it does not shutdown at all, until you click the red shutdown button.

My question is what the heck are they talking about in the release notes with,
Shutdown timeout

For your convenience, the shutdown timeout is reduced to 10s.
From what I can see nothing has changed to 10 seconds.

From the time you click the shutdown button to shutdown has been reduced to 10 seconds. Before this the setting for the shutdown timeout was longer. A period of time is needed before actually shutting down the system in order to give any running processes time to shutdown before your actual computer does. Otherwise you risk data corruption.

The menu is for options other than shutdown.

OK, so I get what your saying, but I just did shutdown both Cinnamon, and MATE (both had all user started applications closed) and the actual time from clicking the red shutdown button to black screen was about 2 to at most 3 seconds.

And to me none of seems any different than to what it was in the past.

I guess I was just curious what they meant by "shutdown timeout is reduced to 10s" because I can see NO difference in Mint 21 behavior to that of previous editions. No matter as long as it works. IE I'd hate to be one of the users who "my pc won't shutdown"

Thanks.

Look at it this way:

The maximum time for the shutdown process is 10 seconds. Now your system may not need 10 seconds to shutdown. However, The maximum time allowed for important things to shutdown is 10 seconds. So, No matter what the system is going to shutdown within 10 seconds.
