Dummy Output - Intel Celeron 4020 - chip-ID: 8086:3198

Post by karambadodo »

Hello! I am new to the forums because I like searching for answers extensively first, but I'm trying to fix this for almost 6 hours!

Dummy output. I've gone through the troubleshooting guide on the top of this forum, but no dice. I think that the next step is messing with SOF drivers and my kernel, but I'm a beginner and I'm lost. I have found a similar, but not exactly equal case in topic viewtopic.php?t=395891 , but I don't know how to install the SOF files.

Here are some terminal Outputs:

Update: I tested a Bluetooth headset and that works, but sadly the headset is broken in half so I can't use it at the moment. The rest remains unchanged.
On a similar vein, would a usb to 3.5mm "soundcard" adapter work?

I'll keep looking for the actual solution

Second Update: Not solved yet, but I have managed to make it work on one of my SSDs. I have two SSDs with Mint, one that has had a previous install, and a brand new one I am preparing for a new computer.
I managed to make sound work on the fresh install on the new SSD, but I am unable to reproduce - or even determine the reasons for - the success I had, now on the old SSD I intend to use
I will need both, since I have a new unit of the same computer I am preparing for someone else.

These are the steps I followed, roughly, on the successful attempt:
- Used the script following the steps on the link: https://github.com/gnickm/sof-essx8336-debian-fix
--- Then modified kernel installed via the script had video issues, so I just used the latest one I had installed previously.
--- At one point, "aplay -l" stopped recognizing any devices, letting out an error output.
- Updated My Kernel to the latest version
--- Note: I was having video issues on the fresh install before doing this, while the old install worked fine. Now both have proper video drivers listed without stuttering.
- In the update manager, I noticed there was an update availiable for the latest kernel (not the one from the script).
- Upon updating and rebooting, the audio Card was recognized! But still, no sound.
- In alsamixer, similarly to viewtopic.php?t=395891, I simply maxed out and unmuted everything I could, this had to include the f3 menu and the f4 (recording) menus.
- Audio working!

On the old install, I never managed to get rid of the dummy audio issue, it's still the same.

Here are the outputs of both installs. Does anyone know what is going on?

If the reviews of the usb sound card indicate it works on Linux-based distros, then yes that adapter should work.
karambadodo wrote: Sun Sep 24, 2023 5:23 pm- Used the script following the steps on the link: https://github.com/gnickm/sof-essx8336-debian-fix
The kernel in that script should not be used in Linux Mint. It was never meant for use with Linux Mint and it stopped receiving updates and security fixes quite a while ago.

PulseAudio is not running and needs to be running.

Audio:
Device-1: Intel Celeron/Pentium Silver Processor High Definition Audio
driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 00:0e.0 chip-ID: 8086:3198
class-ID: 0401
Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k6.2.0-33-generic running: yes
Sound Server-2: PulseAudio v: 15.99.1 running: no
Sound Server-3: PipeWire v: 0.3.48 running: yes

Are you not just able to re-install on the one not working? That would probably be the cleanest way to make sure you do not have problems from whatever you tried which led to this point in time. I do not have any guesses why the SOF card is not showing in the one with no sound, but even if PulseAudio was running, the lack of a SOF card being seen would stop sound from happening.
