How to keep the security level high in Linux

Post by foca23 »

Hello colleagues, it turns out that I have had attacks from external machines, I don't know what that attack is called, and I decided to migrate to Linux because I heard that it was safer, now I would like your help or recommendation so that you could guide me on what programs I need to install on linux to keep the security levels of my computer high.
I installed linux mint Cinnamon, but just yesterday I installed it, it could not install the boot but I am repairing it with Boot-Repair-Disk so if you have any recommendations, I will gladly apply it.
I don't know if it has anything to do with it but they also stole my WhatsApp and installed it on another cell phone and in Windows they started remote desktop from other machines.
Thank you for your comments and I will be very attentive.

Welcome to the forums.

Your Mint machine will likely be more secure than Windows - IF you have have a strong root password.
You will want to install Firejail which, when used correctly, will give another layer of protection around your browser and other programs such as Thunderbird - however, it might have a tiny learning curve - if you save a file to a non-allowed folder other than that allowed, you won't have saved that file to your computer no matter how much it looks like you have.

The following site will help you lots and talk you through doing certain things - take your time with it. There is also a lot about security and things you should do/not do.

Remember that nothing is impenetrable, but you can make it harder for them.
Your Whatsapp is a different thing and you'll have to look through Whatsapp help to sort that out.

Mostly, if a computer is used insecurely, (dodgy links clicked on etc), then no matter what operating system is used, it will likely eventually be compromised in one way or another.

Another thing to do might be to secure your router - change the password etc. Make sure that it is fully patched - if it is a few years old it is likely to have vulnerabilities that are unpatched.
Disconnect SMART devices as they can be an opening into your network.
Let us know what you do and whether it works - it might help someone else in the same predicament.

Or none at all, as is the standard for Mint. By default, Mint only uses a user password.

Within the initial steps, could you recommend an antivirus and a firewall, for Linux, thank you very much?

It's just good information to have. If Mint asks for your password, what is asked for is your normal user password.
I do agree that it's smart to use a password that you can remember and type easily but is not easy for others to guess. This adds an important layer of safety.

I would recommend switching on the default firewall with the default settings. You already have it installed.
As for antivirus, I would not recommend using one.

Hello Moem, what do you think, I had been recommended security tools such as Firejail and the free antivirus Clamtk, but tell me if these apps are good in your opinion, and I really value them a lot.
Thank you.

Hello, sorry but I don't use either of them, so I really can't comment.
