<Solved> Survivability of additional desktops
If I install an another DE such as Mate, will it remain intact after an lmde upgrade, say 5 to 6 or 6 to 7(when available)?

Intact not exactly coz you're going to get a newer build of Mate (Elsie --> Faye).
Now if you are afraid that Mint Upgrade will overwrite your configuration and make Cinnamon default again, I'm pretty sure it won't.
However the more you customize a system the fewer the chances for uneventful base-system upgrades become.
