RESOLVED: Broadcom Wireless Network Card "UNCLAIMED"

Post by RagingBullDurham »

I installed LMDE 6 Faye on my laptop (Linux Kernel 6.1.0.12-amd64) and my wireless network is not visible/working. (Worked perfectly after LMDE 5 install)

My wireless card:

Code: Select all

 $ lspci -nn -d 14e4:
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:4727] (rev 01)
UNCLAIMED Status.

Code: Select all

$ sudo lshw -C network
***
  *-network UNCLAIMED
       description: Network controller
       product: BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter
       vendor: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:02:00.0
       version: 01
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
       capabilities: pm msi pciexpress cap_list
       configuration: latency=0
       resources: memory:f7d00000-f7d03fff
From this article (seems to be pretty up to date), I'm learning that my card should be installed by default:
14e4:4727 rev 01 Special Case #1/firmware-b43-installer:
Special Case #1 - Uses bcma and brcmsmac driver combination. Required firmware is installed by default in the package linux-firmware.
But it looks like linux-firmware is not on my system nor available:

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt install linux-firmware
...
E: Unable to locate package linux-firmware
And I can't figure out what repository to add to get access.

Please help me get my wireless network card to work (like it did w/ LMDE5)

It might help us to see more details. Post what this shows:

Code: Select all

 inxi -Fxxxrz ; rfkill list ; iwconfig ; mokutil --sb-state

Looks like I already have this...

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt install firmware-brcm80211
...
firmware-brcm80211 is already the newest version (20230210-5).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Again, according to this article I need to only install "linux-firmware" package - but

Code: Select all

$sudo apt install linux-firmware
...
E: Unable to locate package linux-firmware

If you were using broadcom-sta-dkms the module isn't signed and the kernel won't allow the driver to load with Secure Boot enabled
I had the same card and it worked with the normal kernel drivers with the broadcom firmware

I just knew that secure boot can cause wifi problems. Didn't know if it would solve the issue, but glad it did. :wink:

I would uninstall it and see if the kernel modules bcma and brcmsmac work like they did for me
The instructions you found were Ubuntu specific, LMDE uses different firmware packages

Uninstall easy:

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt remove broadcom-sta-dkms
Works fine. BUT

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt install bcma
...
E: Unable to locate package bcma
- same for brcmsmac

I obviously don't know what I am doing. How do I install bcma and brcmsmac?

if this is still actual, you need to load module first

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe brcm
or to load module on boot create file /etc/modules-load.d/brcm.conf containing one line: brcm
-=t42=-
Locked
