What is the best application to video chat using linux?
I used to use skype quite a bit (when I used windows) but I'd rather use an open source application if possible. I'm not certain but I don't think skype supports video on linux.
I want to chat with friends and family and ideally be able to see each other as well. What is the best application for doing this.
Thanks for the help

Skype should work in the same manner.

I'm downloading skype as I type thisproxima_centauri wrote:Skype should work in the same manner.
These are the Hardware requirements for Skype
* Hardware requirements
* 1 Ghz processor or faster.
* 256 MB RAM.
* 20 MB free disk space on your hard drive.
* Microphone and speakers or headset.
* Internet connection – broadband is best (GPRS is not supported for voice calls).
* Video card driver with Xv support.
Why doesn't it say webcam?
Also I don't believe that Skype is open source.
Re: What is the best application to video chat using linux?
Install it through Synaptic Package Manager
Re: What is the best application to video chat using linux?
Ok I must be doing something daft.
I go to Software manager and I look at all the internet applications and I see skype. It's selected yellow at the moment. But when I press intsall it goes through what appears to be an installation process, but doesn't install.
I don't get any failure message, but I do notice that skype is highlighted yellow.
What am I doing wrong?

I went to the skype website and downloaded. From there, the package installer ran. Used the ubuntu 9.10, in my case x64, .deb file.

http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-beta-ubuntu-32
I used this one and it works but I have yet not got my cam to work on it although cam works on aMSN.
The test button just makes the whole screen go grey but hit any key and your back.
Good luck

You're out of date proxima-centauri , skype hasn't been in the repos for a while now, it was removed by ubuntu due to conflicts. You have to install direct from skype, currently at beta2 - 2.1.0.81.1. Choose ubuntu 8.10+ for helena and gloria.proxima_centauri wrote:Install it through Synaptic Package Manager

Has anyone actually got skype to work with their webcam?
I don't know how you could do video chat without a webcam.
