Delay before there is audio

Post by JC Denton »

On LMDE 6. There is about a 1-5 second delay before there is any audio. It's almost like my speakers are asleep and being woken up. This happens when I have my speakers connected to my monitor, which is connect to my RX 7900 XT via display port. When I plug them into my PC directly there is no delay.

Someone with speakers on their monitor (part of the monitor and not separate speakers) was having a similar issue and it turned out a firmware update was needed for the monitor for it to handle the sound without a delay. In their case the monitor was still under warranty and had to be returned for the firmware update :| but the turnaround time was quite fast and the cost was covered by the manufacturer.

Your situation is slightly different because your speakers are not part of the monitor, but you might have a similar issue. What is the monitor name and model number?

I should probably add that I don't have this issue on Windows 10.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

You were previously running LM21.1. Were you having this issue with it?

I ask because LMDE 6 is a step backwards with regards to the Mesa graphics stack as well as some other graphics-related software. Debian is more for stability rather than support for the latest hardware.

Previously, your onboard GPU was not showing in inxi which I presume was because of how you had things set up in the BIOS/UEFI with regards to graphics. However, if both are showing in inxi, then drivers for both should load and that didn't happen which is puzzling. While I wouldn't think that would affect this issue, strange things happen all the time when not all drivers are loaded so I don't rule it out.

Device-1: AMD Navi 31 [Radeon RX 7900 XT/7900 XTX] driver: amdgpu v: kernel arch: RDNA-3 pcie:
speed: 16 GT/s lanes: 16 ports: active: DP-1 empty: DP-2,DP-3,HDMI-A-1 bus-ID: 12:00.0
chip-ID: 1002:744c
Device-2: AMD Cezanne [Radeon Vega Series / Radeon Mobile Series] driver: N/A arch: GCN-5 pcie:
speed: 8 GT/s lanes: 16 bus-ID: 30:00.0 chip-ID: 1002:1638

In order to get the most from one's graphics for a 7900 XT, I recommend having the most recent BIOS/UEFI for the motherboards, the newest available kernel, and the latest linux-firmware. LMDE 6 meets only the bare minimum needed for a 7900 XT.

There are backports available in LMDE where you can install a newer kernel which will provide you with a newer AMD driver. I'm not sure what is available with regards to linux-firmware so you can start with a newer kernel and see if that helps.

As with any change, I recommend taking a Timeshift snapshot. You can install the latest kernel (which I think is 6.5) with

Code: Select all

sudo apt install -t bookworm-backports linux-image-amd64

I did not have my speakers hooked up to my monitor when I was using regular Mint. I have them connected to my monitor now for convenience as I have older consoles hooked to it. I couldn't get my GPU to run properly on regular Mint, so I was hopping to different distros, but none of theme worked as well as Mint before my GPU upgrade.

Updating the kernel doesn't seem to have done anything. I saw this solution brought up a few times while searching, but LMDE doesn't seem to have default.pa.

There's an entire section on the 7900 XT in Tips for Troubleshooting Graphics Issues (including external monitors not working) which is a sticky at the top of the Graphics Cards & Monitors forum. While there were issues when it first came out a year ago, I've not heard of others having issues recently. Use the 6.5-oem kernel and update to the latest amdgpu linux-firmware.

LMDE 6 doesn't use PulseAudio. It only uses PipeWire.

I fixed it by opening /usr/share/wireplumber/main.lua.d/50-alsa-config.lua, uncommenting --["session.suspend-timeout-seconds"] = 5, -- 0 disables suspend by removing the two dashes at the beginning, and changing 5 to 0. I logged out and back in and now there's no more delay. Thanks for trying to help me.
