Beginner needing help installing MakeMKV

Post by Logansfury »

Hello everyone,

I am very eager to try MakeMKV, but I am a bit confused by the installation instructions on the page from this forum:

https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=224

I see:

Unpack both packages and starting from source package do the following steps:
For makemkv-oss package:

Code: Select all

./configure
make
sudo make install

I am now afraid to proceed because I don't know if this is a single command (the select all seems to suggest it) or if I enter this as three separate commands (which seems more sensical to me)

next step is just as cryptic:

For makemkv-bin package:

Code: Select all

make
sudo make install

The application will be installed as "/usr/bin/makemkv".

Again, I dont know if this is one command in terminal or two.

Also I am brand new to linux I have never unpacked a tar.gz before.

Do I just download, and navigate to the directory it downloaded to in terminal and start performing the above commands or do I have to use a Linux version of window's 7zip to open it first?

I am on Linux Mint 21.2 Victoria | Cinnamon.

Can anyone please help?

Thank you for reading,

Logan

That was a wise move, but if click on 'select all' it will highlight all the listed commands so you can copy and paste them into your screen AS INDIVIDUAL COMMANDS. It will simplify the editing work for lazy typists (which some are) or error-prone typists (everyone else). I don't think you are either one unless I missed the memo. In fact if you click on select all, that's all it really does -- that's the harmless step.

You can post the next hurdle in this forum, and try to stump the volunteers. I swear I have the problem that's about to happen, But I think the resulting EMP will take out half the city. Just kidding.

Far out, thank you for the confirmation, I will execute these as five separate commands as I suspected.

Does the tar.gz file need any preparation/unzipping or do I simply open a terminal, navigate to the tar.gz's directory and begin performing the commands?

You can make installation (and updating) easier for yourself by using the long established PPA provided by hjmooses on Launchpad - https://launchpad.net/~heyarje/+archive ... kemkv-beta

The command line instructions are:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:heyarje/makemkv-beta
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install makemkv-bin makemkv-oss

I think I am happier having dealt with my first compile situation. Now I know what to do with tar.gz :)
