Mint boots to black screen(b. s.)

Post by call_me_steven »

Hello everyone,

I have a peculiar problem and I need your help.

My new installed Mint boots to a b. s., but only the first time (a restart will solve the issue) and only if the computer was turned off for a while.

First boot in the moring => b. s.
Restart, no problem. Shutting it down, killing the power supply and restarting again, no further problems.

Come home from work, nine hours later, boots to a b. s.

I tried and added xxx.modeset=0 to /etc/default/grub
xxx = nvidia, nouveau, i915

Pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 while looking at the b. s. didn't do anything.

Any ideas, what I could try to fix it, would be very appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Welcome to the forum, Steven.

Please make sure you remove all that from grub because it is not needed.

Your system has a 12th-gen Intel CPU and as such needs a newer kernel than the 5.15 kernel to get all the proper drivers installed.

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel AlderLake-S GT1 vendor: Micro-Star MSI driver: N/A bus-ID: 00:02.0
chip-ID: 8086:4680

Please upgrade to the 6.2 kernel in Update Manager.
Instructions for upgrading to the 6.2 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 6.2 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
Let us know if that clears the situation.

Please also check to see if this is the latest BIOS/UEFI for your system. I believe there are newer ones available.

Thank you for replying and the warm welcome, SMG.
I will do, as I am told and keep you updated.

Altough... I used to run Vanessa, or was it Una (I can't remember) and never experienced these problems with this hardware setting.
Confusing

Update:

It did the job (I am leaving out the part, where I went into recovery and timeshifted my "Linux Mint Forums" password away), but...

[ 0.396346] pcieport 0000:00:1c.0: pciehp: Cannot get irq -1 for the hotplug controller
[ 0.396351] pcieport 0000:00:1c.0: pciehp: Notification initialization failed (-1)
[ 1.918218]

is now a message I recieve.

· changing modes, from nvidia to intel, results in a 1280 × 720 resolution.
· the line out pops delayed into existence, so no sound at the beginning for quite a long time.

I don't understand this post.

I would think "It did the job" means it worked, but then you talk about error messages and talk about changing from Nvidia to Intel (but don't say how you did that or why it is relevant).

If this is the correct link, the latest BIOS/UEFI is version 1F from early November. Your system is missing eight updates consisting of a variety of fixes.
