Cannot open DVD with Handbrake. Please help

Post by Logansfury »

Hello all,

I just installed Handbrake DVD ripper (not the flatpak) from Software Manager, and I cannot get my DVD open. When I browse to the DVD drive I see this:

What should I do?

Thanks for reading,

Logan

When you open the dvd drive, you will see two folders - AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS
Click on, but don’t open the VIDEO_TS folder, and press Open or OKAY. (Cant remember which button it uses)

Thank you, I was able to follow these instructions, but it appears the DVD is bad.

Testing with another DVD proved MakeMKV and Handbrake are both working fine on my system, but this one DVD of the Two Towers just cant be read by either application. It PLAYS fine in Celluloid as soon as I load the dvd, it just wont read for ripping.

I would check for rhe most recent update to the application, and then I would contact their support team. Be prepared to provide the necessary information; they're in a better position to troubleshoot something that they developed. Hope you eventually get this matter resolved, in any case.

As in LOTR? I had no issues, long time ago but probably used makeMKV and then handbrake to convert to m4v. File size is 1.7GB.

Yep Lord of the Rings :)

evidently the disc has some kind of copywrite protection. While neither MakeMKV nor Handbrake will read this DVD, they both worked on another DVD just fine.

Sometimes making an ISO from the DVD works for me.
Once done open the dvd in handbrake. Select the film from the drop down list, and try again.
It could be just a scratch or dust on the dvd that’s stopping handbrake from reading it, and there a chance it won’t be in the same part of the disc as the film.
So make sure the dvd is clean!

I gently washed the DVD under warm water with a dash of dishwashing soap, and dried carefully, but the error persists.

Another user has suggested that the DVD must have copywrite protection on it. I bought this and I feel I have a right to back it up against damage/loss.

Is there anyway to rip DVD's with this protection?

Try makeMKV, when I have a problem with handbrake that is what I try next.

Unfortunately MakeMKV cannot read the DVD either:

MakeMKV v1.17.5 linux(x64-release) started

Using direct disc access mode

Error 'Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR' occurred while reading 'DVD+R-DL hp DVD A DH16AESH 3HH5 2M8332901614' at offset '887902208'

Cells 56-56 were removed from title end

Title #1 (2:59:11) was skipped due to navigation error

Failed to open disc

It's a long time since I did it, but with makeMKV you need to go into the VIDEO_TS folder and select the largest file (that is usually the video) and let it rip that.

Can you play any other DVDs that are commercially produced, ie. DVDs purchased from a store?
Have you installed the libdvd-pkg which will also install libdvdcss, needed to play or use many commercial DVDs?
If not you must Install the libdvd-pkg package (no need to add third party repositories) via Synaptic or command line

Code: Select all

sudo apt install libdvd-pkg
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg
Follow libdvd-pkg's instructions to let it download, compile, and install libdvdcss.

The DVD as well as other DVD's play fine.

I was pretty sure I had already done what you suggested, terminal confirmed:

logansfury@HP-Z220-SFF-Workstation:~$ sudo apt install libdvd-pkg
[sudo] password for logansfury:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
libdvd-pkg is already the newest version (1.4.3-1-1).
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
libwmf0.2-7 linux-headers-5.15.0-87 linux-headers-5.15.0-87-generic
linux-headers-5.15.0-88 linux-headers-5.15.0-88-generic
linux-image-5.15.0-87-generic linux-image-5.15.0-88-generic
linux-modules-5.15.0-87-generic linux-modules-5.15.0-88-generic
linux-modules-extra-5.15.0-87-generic linux-modules-extra-5.15.0-88-generic
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.
logansfury@HP-Z220-SFF-Workstation:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg
libdvd-pkg: guest package [libdvdcss2/1.4.3-1~local] is already installed.
logansfury@HP-Z220-SFF-Workstation:~$

Even with this ripping package installed, Handbrake and MakeMKV both error out when trying to rip this DVD
