Linux cannot display the resolution that windows can. [SOLVED]

Hello,
I have a desk in my den with a pair of LG 40" TV/Monitors and a Sony 24" TV atop it, with 2 computers underneath connected to a KVM switch to share monitors. One win 10 machine and one Linux Mint box. The two computers each have a low-profile HDMI/DVI/VGA 3-port video card. Each computer is successfully displaying on all 3 monitors. However, windows 10 is running resolutions of 3840x2160 (16:9), 3840x2160 (16:9) , 1360x768 (16:9) and Linux Mint seems stuck at 1920x1080 (16:9), 1920x1080 (16:9), 1360x768 (16:9).

I opened up Display Setting on the Linux box, and monitors 2 & 3 show available resolutions of 3840x2160 (16:9) and 4096x2160 (9:5). I tried setting each to 3840x2160 and the system freaked out. It went black for a long time then showed 2 different versions of ripped and distorted wallpapers and wouldnt accept keeping settings. I upgraded kernel from 5.15.0-89-generic to 6.2.0-37-generic and then tried setting the resolution up but the same backscreen and distortion afterwords happened.

Would anyone know why I cant get the resolution on Linux that I can get on Windows with the same video card?

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

LG monitors are known to not always play well with Linux Mint, but we need to see more information to be able to help you get the proper resolutions.

Just as an FYI, if this is the correct link, it appears the latest BIOS/UEFI is version 1.87. I see some Intel microcode updates in a couple of the ones you do not have. It may not affect this issue, but Windows and Linux-based distros do not always respond the same to BIOS/UEFI updates. Sometimes updates have no effect on Windows, but they help with Linux-based distro issues.

Is there a particular reason you are using the Nvidia-390 driver? Your GPU can use the newer Nvidia-470 driver. Perhaps that change will be all that is needed.

I checked the Nvidia website and the newest Windows driver is 474 so if that is what you are using on Windows then I would expect there might be a difference. Numbering system is not exactly the same for both, but they are close so 474/470 are probably the comparable drivers.

I was on the newer driver, and upon forum advice, I downgraded to see if the older driver would be successful where the new driver wasn't.

Thank you for the HP page, I will surf there on the HP Box and let the diagnostic run.

The 470 driver has been very good for many people. I suggest using that one and then providing the output of xrandr --verbose. It's likely we can add the "missing" resolutions if they are not being picked up automatically.

I went to the HP page you linked, but it doesn't work on my system. It said I needed to download software to enable the site diagnostics, but when I selected OK for software, it was unable to open the repository. Page just froze on me.

:? What browser are you using? I have Firefox 120 installed (with no extensions).

I have no idea what "site diagnostics" might be (unless it was something I rejected a long time ago).

When you tried them previously, were you selecting 24Hz, 25Hz or 30Hz? I mention those three specifically because when I ran the EDIDs through the decoder, those were the options for the higher resolution (which is not the preferred resolution of the monitors). If you were using 60Hz, that might be why there were issues.

When reading xrandr output, *= current resolution and += preferred resolution.

I had not seen any settings for adjusting that option. I will go back and see if I can find that and set it down from 60Hz

Yep the setting was the second dropdown option. I swapped from 59.9Hz to 29.9Hz on each LG monitor and I have the proper resolution! Desktop real-estate for days :)
