New install goes to black screen following update

Post by Alexdad54 »

Hi all,
First time poster herplwease let me know if this is in the wrong sub-forum
I am fairly familiar with Mint as Ive been using it on my small desktop for a couple of years with no issues.
This past weekend, I did a clean install of the latest version of MINT on my sons HP Pavilion 590 (which has an AMD Ryzen 3 gpu) over the originally installed Windows 10, wiping the HDD and it seemed to install with no issues.
Unfortunately as soon as the usual system updates were finished it now refuses to display the desktop at all. I get to the log in, put in the username and password and then, after a brief half second glimpse of the desktop, it goes black and a faint bonging sound comes from the PC for a while. The sound stops after a few minuites but there is still nothing displayed, even the cursor.
I suspect a graphics driver issue but I have no idea how to get to where I can download and install a new driver from the AMD website.
There is also a very brief error message that displays during the boot up but its gone before I can write it down
Appreciate any suggestions!

Apologies if this is in the incorrect format, I could only copy and paste as the pc keeps rebooting, even using a live usb version of Mint.

That's the bottom part of the information. However, those temperatures are quite high and it may be the system is overheating and shutting down. Ideally, CPU temps should be less than 50 C.

I did a search on Pavilion 590 on this forum and found HP Pavilion won't install [SOLVED !} which was an Intel-based computer and not AMD, but it sounds like they were having a somewhat similar issue. Their issue was a bad power supply.

A bad PSU (power supply unit) would cause that type of situation.

Was your son having issues with the computer before you attempted to install Linux Mint?

Thanks for the help SMG, I think you may have nailed it re the psu.
I had tried to upgrade the Windows 10 on his pc over the original factory install a coupole of months ago and it kep shutting down during that new install boot as well. As you said, probably the psu....
The good thing is that having had to use my pc, my son found he really likes Mint so that's what led me to trying to install it over the windows OS.
I've looked online and it looks like I can upgrade the psu from 180w to 400w with an oem partrelatively inexpensively so I'll try that route and hopefully it will solve the issue.
Many thanks again!

Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Wani
The above is the problem. A 5.15 kernel above version 84 is problematic with the AMD Wani gpu.

Install the 6.5 kernel

I think everything is running well now and that I connected everything correctly but it still does random reboots although I'm nore vertain its a power issue. Here is my system report, any advice really appreciated:
The data you posted is showing the system is in software rendering (llvmpipe) mode.

Graphics:
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 15.0.7 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 23.0.4-0ubuntu1~22.04.1
direct render: Yes

You can run

Code: Select all

glxinfo -B
to verify if that is true or not.

I don't know if the newer kernel will help with the random reboots. That wasn't the issue in the other topic; the other issue was strictly a graphics issue.

These temps are still on the warm side.

Code: Select all

Sensors:
  System Temperatures: cpu: 57.6 C mobo: N/A gpu: amdgpu temp: 57.0 C
  Fan Speeds (RPM): N/A
It's been a while since I've checked a log with reboots in it, but I think they do record in syslog which is a text file in /var/log. (syslog is the current file. syslog.1 is the one prior to it, etc.) If I am recalling correctly, the line will say "Reboot" so you can search the log for it and see what happens just prior to it.
