LMDE 6 vs LMDE 5

Post by pnachtwey »

I had been using LMDE 5 with jupyter lab with no problems. I upgraded to LMDE 6 and suddely jupyter lab does not work unless I install it in a env. Why the change? I have other linux machines, an old Mac Book Pro and two Win11 machines. NONE of these require that I need to use venv. Why is LMDE 6 now suddenly different from everyone else?

This seems to be related to Debian's new policy on installing Python applications. If that's true, it is an "upstream" decision Mint devs have no control on. You have to either use an official debian package, pipx (with its disadvantages) or virtualenv (as you already do).
BTW: "LMDE 6 vs LMDE 5" is too vague a title. People who know better than me or have experience with this specific application may ignore your thread.
