No LAN mounting with USB-Ethernet adapter

Post by Bertium »

Once I made an Ethernet (10/100 Ethernet ) connection to a WIN PC under Ubuntu at an old laptop choosing "Lokal verbinden" and then I had to enter the network name of the WIN PC as "smb://servername" and it worked well. This old laptop is defect now but the network PC and cable did not change.

Because my notebook has no LAN connector I got an USB-Ethernet adapter (USB2.0 and 10/100 Ethernet ). This adapter was detected under LMDE6 see below. I choose again in the network settings "local connect" but I can not find the field to enter the "smb://servername". Is this different in LMDE6? If I click the Windows-Netzwerk icon a message appears: "Einhängen des Ortes nicht möglich...." (mounting not possible...). The Lamps on the adapters RJ Jack do not light on.

What can I do or what setting have I to choose to connect under LMDE6? How to enter the server name?

Thank you for ideas. Norbert

Might be just missing firmware, check

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep firmware; dmesg | grep -i firmware

Seems like the driver is already there:

OP doesn't say they cannot connect to localnetwork/web or they need drivers whatsoever. They assume -most likely wrongly- that it is the converter responsible for not being able to connect to sambashares previously accessible on an Ubuntu installation. This is what I at least understood. But it could be everything... I would start by installing Samba in the first place. It is not pre-installed in my LMDE system.

Thank you to all for respond to my questions.

OK I installed samba and got this status messages below

Now Ethernet connection establishes and the status lamp on the connector flashes.
Network info says that it is connected.

This is already an advantage!

If I open the network folder I can see a folder for my "linuxPC" and sub folder "nobody" and a folder "windos-netzwerk" but with the same error "mounting not possible" if I try to open it.

So not finally successful. Did I forget somewhat? Do I need this "smb://winPC" again and how?
