I have just upgraded LM Cinnamon to the 21.3 edition (using the actualisation manager). Everything seems to be OK. But the login screen looks like before, lack of ability Wayland option. What should I do to get this option?

Everything, which can be told about Wayland support in Linux Mint at this point in time, can be read in the section titled Wayland on this webpage: Linux Mint 21.3 New Features. Scroll down to the section titled Wayland.

Look at the icon above login field. It is possible to choose session when you click on it.

To be clear, is this the OFFICIAL LM 21.3 (Virginia) release, or are we still in BETA mode?

It is the official ISO for LM21.3. There is no "beta" in the title of this topic.

Moderator note: Another set of posts referencing the upgrade process which are off-topic for this release notice were moved to Upgrading to LM21.3 Virginia.

As stated in the blog post mentioned in the first post of this topic:
Upgrade instructions:
  • If you are running the BETA you don’t need to upgrade, use the Update Manager to apply available updates.
  • Upgrade instructions for Linux Mint 21, 21.1 and 21.2 will be provided shortly.
That second bullet means the instructions have not yet been provided.

If you go down the topics in the Releases & Announcements forum, you will see there is not yet a topic for upgrading to LM21.3.

Many people get excited when they see something new. :)

It took me a while before I realized people were upgrading and not having problems with the ISOs and its subsequent updates.

Moderator note: Even more posts moved to the Upgrading to LM21.3 Virginia topic because this topic is only about doing a fresh install from an ISO.

Thank you!

I installed it yesterday and I have a problem with the panel; it never hides although I set it to "always hide". :(

Congrats on the 21.3 release (I saw the option to upgrade in Update Manager, but I am currently on a record uptime on Mint 21.2-Xfce of 143 days and counting (my previous record was 105 days) as I am going to see how far I can push this, so it will probably be months before I upgrade to 21.3-Xfce is my guess). I have been using Mint on my primary PC etc for a full 5 years here in Jan 2024 (I started in Jan 2019) ;)

but in the near future, say 6 months to a year or so... I suspect when it comes to Mint 22.0, on the side of caution, I might wait until 22.1, which will probably be Dec 2024 or Jan 2025, before upgrading (as ill typically opt for clean installs of major versions) as I figure by then any bugs with Ubuntu 24.04 LTS will be ironed out by then and will probably be a bit more supported by software at that point. according to 'stat /' it says "Birth: 2022-08-04", so Aug 4th 2022, when I clean installed Mint 21.x series and it's been solid since.

p.s. when I occasionally load a Windows 11 VM on Mint through QEMU/KVM, it makes me all the more glad I switched to Mint, as while I take Linux/Mint for granted, you can really see how sluggish/bloated Windows is as it takes a while before it becomes more usable and HDD activity slows down where as Mint is noticeably more snappy in that regard as shortly after boot CPU/SSD/HDD activity stops unlike Windows it lingers for a while and just other random junk that we don't have to deal with on Mint.

SMG, speaking as a neophyte, seeing the Update Manager show files available to "update" makes one want to press the button and proceed to update.

Why were files for Mint 20.3 sent to Update Manager for machines that were already running Linux Mint?

I know there are many people who do not understand the difference between a fresh install from the ISO and an in-place upgrade from a previous versions, but please stop discussing the upgrade process in this topic about fresh installs from the ISOs.

The upgrade process announcement will come tomorrow. You can either wait for it and post in that topic or you can go to the other topic I linked and ask questions now.
