LMDE 6: How to install printer driver for Canon iP1980?

Post by lazydog07 »

I am using LMDE 6 Faye. My printer is a Canon Pixma iP1980. Connected directly to the USB port.
When I turned on the printer, LMDE detected this as iP1900-series.

On Print Settings > Properties:
Device URI: usb://Canon/iP1900%20series?serial=B8B39F
Make and Model: Generic Text-Only Printer

So I tried to change the driver. On Change Driver there are three options:
Select printer from database > I couldn't find proper driver
Provide PPD file > Went to Canon web site but no PPD file
Search printer driver to download: Model found as Canon PIXMA-iP1900 but on the next page it says the driver is gutenprint.
Whenever I clicked Forward nothing happened. I tried this severel times.

Looking at the Software Manager I can see that gutenprint is already installed:
printer-driver-gutenprint
5.3.4.20220624T01008808d602-1

I tried CUPS (http://localhost:631/printers/): When searching for drivers, iP1900 is not even listed

I also tried the above from Recovery mode but same result.
When I print document and select the iP1900 nothing showed up in the Jobs list.

Is there a way somehow to make my printer works in LMDE 6?

Checking the canon website, the ip1980 is not listed, there is only the ip1900 which dates back to 2009.

For that model there are no proprietary drivers provided for Linux.
So my guess is you are stuck if it does not work ootb. I hope I'm wrong though.
