Mint won't print a PDF on any printer - ( Solved with QpdfView/LO Draw )

Post by AZgl1800 »

don't matter which OS I am using, I cannot Print a PDF,
the printer hangs up, and shows an error almost immediately.

this time, it is a Canon TR4700 series, I installed it with Windows so that all of the drivers are available, and the printer is aware of its' IP address on my WiFi channel.

LM21.3 finds the printer automatically and all works except for: PDFs

I can print text pages, and LO Writer and LO Calc sheets just fine....

but PDFs are Verboten, period.

the printer hangs up, and shows an error almost immediately
Any specific error or just "error"?

the printer Error light is lit,
I should have caught a screenshot of the CUPS error, it said "processing - printer connected" which is not very helpful.

those error can also mean that the pdf is spitting out some hieroglyphs,
that the printer is unable to resolve .. an comms error of sorts.

One page, in this particular case a legal document for the Department of Motor Vehicles.
it was to be notarized....

I finally just made the PDF screen small enough, that I could get a Screenshot, and then pasted that Screenshot into LO Writer, scaled it appropriately and printed that out w/o a hitch.

made for a funny looking document though, it has an outline not present in the PDF

at home, we have two printers available, and both of them hang up when printing a PDF, so something is really amiss in the way that Linux is sending the PDF to the printer.

IF, I save the PDF to a thumb-drive, and reboot into Windows, the PDF will print perfectly.
I should have thought of that this morning.... argh...
this laptop is dual boot with Win10

What program are you using to try to print PDFs?

I am at my sister's home in Utah, her husband passed 8/8/2023 and he was very private, did not allow her to know anything about finances, Period!!!!

no titles to the farm, nor the vehicles, nothing....
I am fighting tooth and nail, to secure her property rights, it has been a horrible nightmare for her, and me also, I am 1500 miles from home, been here 7 weeks now, trying to get things legal, so I can take her to my home, after her farm is sold.

Have you tried a different PDF viewer? You can print PDFs from many of the free viewers.

I do not envy you your task up there. Take care of yourself and try not to push yourself too hard. They aren't cheap but, if you haven't done so already, you might consider hiring a lawyer or, at least, an accountant. Good luck and hang in there!

Edit: I remembered one time I need a JPG of a PDF. I opened up the PDF in my PDF editor and did a Save As, changing the file type from .pdf to .jpg. It's a kludge but if it can be done with Master PDF, you might be able to print the JPGs from an image viewer, such as PIX.

Another thought: If you have Libre Office Draw, you could open a PDF in there and then print it.

These wouldn't be cures for the problem but one or the other might at least get your printing done while up in Utah.

My wife is a knitter and downloads loads of patterns.

These have sometimes been an absolute menace to print, usually because they've been created from Adobe Illustrator or whatever and are on weirdly shaped pages.

I have found that using the CUPS+Gutenprint driver as opposed to CUPS alone I get a much better success rate.

Another possibility is to install the CUPS PDF driver on linux and print to that - then try to print that file instead of the original. This can be useful if you are trying to print an on-line form output.

it starts out as an Online Form, but it allows me to save it locally.
but, it could still be trying to communicate with the Agency it was downloaded from.
had not thought of that, so thanks for that thought.

Success, tnx for putting me on track.

installed QpdfView, and it prints just fine.

QpdfView.jpg

Then I tested LO Draw, and it actually works smoother, as it does not create printer errors, that QpdfView does, even though it continues to print.

I have sort of the same thing with my canon printer sometimes when I accidently sent something with a wrong paper size to the printer it hangs. The document you try to print probably is probably legal size. Try to select another paper size in the print settings before you send it to the printer.

Now that I know that LO Draw can import the PDF,
the problem has disappeared....

LO always prints for me.

You may be able to send the PDF to the printer using your mobile phone. Just a thought.

When I was first installing the printer, it was with the mobile phone app supplied by Canon...
but, the printer did not respond to Mint...

so, I rebooted into Windows and installed the printer that way, then Mint would find it immediately, and print to it...

for now, using LO Draw is the simplest and most predictable way for me to use it.

I had a printer filter fail on my hp (old one) and I needed printing immediately. So I used a live CD mint 2.3 and connected to my printer and Voilà! it worked. Now later I can see if I can get my printer to work on my pc.
