Updated Mint apps on LMDE 6?

Post by soulstenance »

So I had been running LMDE 6 when 21.3 dropped and shortly after, I got the same 6.x updates for the Mint apps trickle into the Faye repos. Today, I had to nuke my install for ...reasons. But when I went to install a fresh copy of LMDE 6, these updates did not happen. Even after installing all system updates, rebooting, and updating again, I still had Nemo 5.8.4 for example. I believe the core Cinnamon package was 5.x as well.

While I don't have a problem with this per se, I am wondering why. I did check the checksum and verify it against Mint's signing key so it's absolutely the correct ISO and not corrupted or anything. My question is, did these packages actually get pulled out of the Faye repos for some reason or is my system misconfigured somehow? Keep in mind I haven't changed anything regarding software sources yet. It's all default. If anyone can shed light on this, I'd be very curious. SHA256 checksum is below, just to confirm this is the valid ISO.

You can browse the repository here: http://packages.linuxmint.com/list.php?release=faye. Nemo is on version 6.0.2+faye. If you don't have that update available in Update Manager, something is wrong on your end.

Check where your Nemo was installed from, which version you have and which other versions are available in your configured repositories with:
apt policy nemo

Share that output and also the output of inxi -Sr to show your system version and configured repositories.

Here is the info you requested. I was also just thinking, I installed LMDE with Ventoy which itself was causing problems for me when I was setting it up. I don't know if they're related or how Ventoy could possibly screw up my installation but I wonder if I should try again using the recommended method on Mint's website. I did check that link which is http for some reason, but yeah, a lot of my core packages are below 6.x for sure.

The repository configuration looks fine. Can you also run apt update and apt list --upgradable and share the output of both.

Hmm, interesting. I just ran the above command on my Debian laptop as well. Why does LMDE have so many extra sources from Debian unlike my actual Debian machine? Is this related? I don't really know - I rarely go into sources on a Mint system since the defaults are typically perfect.

Nothing, except a recent Firefox update which I'm applying now. :?

You seem to have enabled backports - which is not standard out of the box.
You also have at some point added i386 architecture.
Neither of these should make a difference...but worth disabling to double check.

AFAIK backports repository is configured by default on LMDE. But that shouldn't matter: no updates come from backports if a package has not first explicitly been installed from backports.

contrib, non-free (which is different from non-free-firmware now enabled by default on Debian) and backports are enabled on LMDE and IMHO this is a good thing, adds to the overall user-friendliness of LMDE.

Added i386 arch (wine needs it) has never been a problem in all debian-based distros I've ever used.

Try to set a different mirror (preferably one close to your location) for Mint faye repo in "Software Sources" and report back.

Yes, whatever is on, is on by default - I haven't made any changes yet. Having backports enabled does make sense from a user friendliness standpoint for sure. I was unaware LMDE did that.

I was about to do this but just before I updated my cache and this happened! I swear I didn't do anything! What the heck?! Haha, it fixed itself somehow?

In my post at the top, this command showed some lines ending in .pdiff. Any idea what these are and should I be worried about them?

Re: Updated Mint apps on LMDE 6?

Quick follow up - I've reinstalled LMDE using a properly flashed ISO as recommended by Mint. No issues so far - packages seem to be updating properly and everything seems to "just work" as expected. Seems somehow Ventoy broke my install or there was some other fluke that did not resurface. Duly noted - will be steering clear of Ventoy going forward.

I'm going to consider this solved for all intents and purposes, however if anyone has any ideas as to what could have possibly gone wrong the first time feel free to spitball any ideas you have.
