LMDE6 regularly crashes - cause unknown

Post by nozzle1000 »

My LMDE6 installation is crashing regularly on my 11th gen Intel Nuc.
This is now the 7th or 8th time. I have already reinstalled LMDE6 - still crashing all the time.
Always instant black screen (video signal is still there). No cursor flashing (except yesterday, where a syslog message appeared and showed a EXT4-fs error (SDA2: root partition). But this was the only time it did that). Ctrl Alt F3 doesn't do anything.
Syslog file doesn't show anything of value - I have included the last 5 "crash logs" which were logged right before the black screens (the last are from the second installation)
The system report app doesn't show any problems. The crash reports tab doesn't show any crash reports. System information doesn't show anything - the field is completely empty HOWEVER it did show the system information after the installation right BEFORE I run the updates (the updates include a Kernel update to 6.1.0.17 for example). So the sys reports app did work just fine with LMDE6 VANILLA install- only after the obligatory updates through the update manager it "broke".
Then there is the system info app in the system settings. If I press "Copy to clipboard" the process hangs and the circle spins endlessly and I have to force quit the system settings.
The command line "inxi -Fxxrzc0" does work which is how got my sys info.

I have no idea what causes these random crashes.
The system crashed always during very light use of the system resources (Firefox with a few tabs open, sometimes celluloid or smplayer opened but not running a video)
Not a single package installed that isn't from the software manager and very few and very common things)
Most of the crashes happened after several hours of use, however today my system crashed after just 1 hour - again while browsing.
I thought the update to kernel 6.5. stable from the backports was the reason but it crashed yesterday on kernel 6.1.0.17 too. (Sidenote: Running the kernel update to 6.5. showed some errors on my second LMDE6 install - the same update on my first LMDE6 was without a fault - how come?)

This all seems to point to a hardware failure but I dont think it is:
I have used this system (and still use on a seperate SSD but without a shared EFI) with the same hardware connected to it with Win11 for months without any problems so far - not a single crash!
I checked the RAM - faultless according to memtest86.
The Samsung SSD is faultless according to SMART. It was also used for months on a Win10 system without problems.
I used the stress CLI app to test high cpu work loads - no crashes and temps are good (fans work fine)
I installed Psensor to monitor my temps (temp values are the same as in Windows)
I have watched the RAM usage to see if I was running out of memory - not even close with 32GB. I have used a swap partition on my first LMDE6 install (8,6GB) and now without a swap partition on my second install.
I have Secure Boot enabled - also during installation of LMDE6. Could that be a cause for these random black screens?
I am completely clueless, what is so special about my system that it must crash every once in a while and why is not a single hint shown in syslog?

Re: LMDE6 regularly crashes - cause unknown

Post by tane »

A couple of ideas;

Maybe install zram to discount any issues with the lack of swap.
Turn off secure boot if you don't need it (careful, windows installed).
Try running with c-state = 0 to see if it is a c-state problem.
Is there a hardware problem (irq16 on boot)?
Check you have the firmware-linux package installed (i915 error).
And surely I have this wrong, but is sda5 being read as REISERFS?
Try turning off the inbuilt wifi and using a wifi stick.

Unfortunately it looks like your model of nuc doesn't support linux according to Intel. It will be interesting to hear what it was when you do figure it out.

Re: LMDE6 regularly crashes - cause unknown

Post by nozzle1000 »

EDIT: problem not solved

Fortunately it seems I've found the cause for this absurd system instability. The system hasn't crashed for almost 3 days in a row now (still second LMDE install). Yesterday by chance I remembered that I made a tweak right after the first installation of LMDE6 which I have not repeated this time:

Increase vm.max_map_count
vm.max_map_count = 2147483642

This is a recommendation from archlinux wiki for the latest games (they instantly black screen on the default value of 65530 - how ironic...).
They warn you about some possible undefined problems with apps that expect the default value. Looks I have at least one of those installed on my system. Since these kind of crashes are not logged, I cannot tell which app (or sys module/driver) is affected by this change.

The EXT-fs error black screen I had on kernel 6.1.0.17 (second install) seemed to be an individual case and unrelated to these BSes that seemingly occur only after several hours of use.

However the system information app (the tab in the system reports app) AND the system information in the system settings remain broken on my system. They can't retrieve my system information. If I press "Copy to clipboard" the process hangs and I have to force quit the system settings.
Both worked just fine on Kernel 6.1.0.12 which is preinstalled on the LMDE6 iso.

Anyway this case is hopefully solved (I hope).

I'm not sure. I'll have to record the boot- and shut-down-process with my phone since these text lines fly by way too fast for me to read them.
Check you have the firmware-linux package installed (i915 error).
firmware-misc-nonfree and xserver-xorg-video-intel is installed according to synaptic (I typed i915 in the search bar)

Its a NTFS partition that I want share with Win11
Unfortunately it looks like your model of nuc doesn't support linux according to Intel.
There's like one NUC model that is officially approved to be Linux compatible. I dont think that means anything - my system runs fine now and every piece of hardware inside is detected and functioning.

Re: [SOLVED] LMDE6 regularly crashes - cause unknown

Post by nozzle1000 »

It seems I jumped to conclusions - the blackscreens still occur.
Today after ~1h runtime, just browsing the web (firefox) the screen turned black. Nothing works - only hard reset.
Before that I had a similar crash on Feb. 3rd - so at least these blackscreens are not as frequent as before but still completely random...
Syslog tells me nothing and again no crash reports.
The only thing that looks suspect in the syslog is this IRQ related error:

I've found someone with the same issue "Azx_interrupt [snd_hda_codec]" - also having stability issues.
https://community.home-assistant.io/t/b ... ror/565157

But according to kernel.org this codec probing problem is "usually relatively harmless"...

I have no idea if this is the reason for the hard crashes. How can the system run several days without a fault and then today it crashes
after 1 hour?
On Win11 I had no hard crashes whatsoever so it must be a software problem or Windows handles hardware faults better - no idea tbh...

So the sys reports app did work just fine with LMDE6 VANILLA install- only after the obligatory updates through the update manager it "broke".
That can often be a sign of a problem with packages not installing properly.

Do you know if you have the most recent BIOS/UEFI installed? I don't know how all that is working now it has been transferred to ASUS.

NUCs have been known to be problematic. I helped several people who ended up RMA'ing them. :(

That message relates to sound.

yes, I have that BIOS version installed "0052" - the latest as far I can see

I don't have any sound related problems - the BIOS apparently just doesn't report the available codecs to the driver though hw acc does work fine anyway. However the built-in Celluloid player has very jarring stutter even though it does use hw decoding (low CPU usage, 15% and less). Meanwhile the SMPlayer when the hw decoder is set to "vaapi" runs the same videos 100% stutter free and also with very low CPU usage.

Another issue that might be related: my monitor (HDMI to HDMI) doesn't go to stand-by - only for a few seconds it turns black (back light is off too) and then awakes again after a few seconds displaying the lock-screen or just displaying the desktop (depending if I turn the lock-screen on or off).

Any idea when the next stable BPO kernel will arrive? Maybe that could automagically fix these problems.

and here's the latest interrupts report from /proc/interrupts. It would be nice to compare it with another NUC11 system

nozzle1000 wrote: Mon Feb 12, 2024 8:01 amAnother issue that might be related: my monitor (HDMI to HDMI) doesn't go to stand-by - only for a few seconds it turns black (back light is off too) and then awakes again after a few seconds displaying the lock-screen or just displaying the desktop (depending if I turn the lock-screen on or off).
Please see this topic [SOLVED] LMDE 6 Monitors not going to sleep.

I found that by doing a search on this forum for NUC11.
