Okay this GUI method surely worked for me. Would never go to the Terminal when I can do GUI. :)
Still have to free up my SSD enough somehow (2nd Drive in computer) so it will let me re-name it.

This one works so good I copied it to my Linux Install Notes Sheet!

Now I have to figure how to re-name the drive. While in there the name is totally editable but won't save,
says Device busy.

Closed out the previous window but maybe have to close out everything on the computer.

1. Right click on and empty space when the drive is opened.
2. On the menu that opens, click on Open as Root
3. Type in your password if prompted and hit ENTER. Otherwise, move on to Step 4.
4. In the window that popped up, right click on an empty space.
5. In the next window that pops up, click on Properties
6. In the next window, click on the Permissions tab at the top of the window.
7.In the next window, scroll the Owner box until you find your user name (or the user name you want) and click on it (it will show the user name being repeated after you choose it).
8. Next, scroll in the Group box until you find the same user name and click on it.
9. Close all the windows, then check to see if the selected user name can read and write to the drive. If so, you are done.

Hello, easydawg.

You cannot rename a disk partition, while it is (still) mounted. This means that in a lot of cases, you will have to startup your machine using a Linux Mint live system in order to rename a disk partition.

Is that boot the computer with only that Drive connected and take the install USB and run it part way through looking for options?

Boot off a USB live drive and you should be able to rename your PC drives/partitions.

I'll give that a try.

I have my corrupted drive I need to format also and hard to remember after all I just went through, I think that drive would not load or format for anything I tried but I may be able to pull it off by now.

Just went thru a couple week recovery after my WIN10 hard crashed but it was a strong finish, ended up finally moving completely over to Linux here.

Thank you for the reply.

Thank you for this clear use of GUI on the Disk dialog menu.
I was struggling trying to use the CHOWN command without success.
haven't used Mint as much recently so really rusty.
6 year old WD Elements 1 TB SSD (ext4)
Even tried copying files as root to PC harddrive, and those were also locked.
Wanted access for NAS without need to enter password constantly.
Anyway, this worked, and I used the "Recursive" option for all subfolders.
Now backing up the drive and all is well...

My version of Disks has a different menu and doesn't include "Take Ownership" or several other options. My version is 42.0. Is there a newer version?
