Mesa 3d driver which supports Vulkan 1.3

Post by altmetaller »

Hi Folks,

the Mesa 3d driver brought with LMDE supports Vulkan 1.2.
root@birdie:~# aptitude versions 'mesa-vulkan-drivers'
Paket mesa-vulkan-drivers:
i 20.3.5-1 oldstable 500

Paket mesa-vulkan-drivers:i386:
i 20.3.5-1 oldstable 500
root@birdie:~#
This is nearly 4 years old.

I need at least Vulkan 1.3

There is an ppa for Debian systems (kisak), but LMDE doesn't support foreign ppa repositories.

Can i solve this without building from sourcecode / replacing the whole operating system?

Greetings,
J.

Short answer: No you can't get what you want.

Long answer: You are obviously still on LMDE5 built on a 4-year old base-system and therefore shipping with 4-year old Mesa drivers.
Debian does not backport newer mesa stacks to its stable releases. I bet it's policy and contributes to what makes Debian Stable... well... stable.

BTW what differentiates Ubuntu from Debian in this respect is not PPAs. Kisak "stable" PPA is actually quite unstable and while it is maintained by a valve engineer I've seen lately quite a few reports that breaks even Valve's steam own package on Ubuntu-based systems.

But Ubuntu has (currently) backported Mesa 23.2.1 to Jammy LTS which every sane user should use anyway.

Hi,

thanks for your reply.

The main problem was quite easy: I thought i had LMDE6, but it was an LMDE5. I forgot to upgrade this PC some years ago :-)

After upgrading to LMDE6 everythink works fine.

Greetings,
Joli
