[SOLVED] VirtManager: Error in creating storage volume.

Post by SilverFox21 »

Hey, y'all. I'm playing with VirtManager (KVM/QEMU) for the first time. I'm trying to install a Windows 11 virtual machine. The setup is going fine until trying to create the storage volume; I want to place it in my documents folder in a folder labeled "Win11." When I do this, I get this error message:

Code: Select all

Error creating vol: Couldn't create storage volume 'win11.qcow2': 'internal error:
Child process (/usr/bin/qemu-img create -f qcow2 -b /home/mark/Downloads/Win11 -o backing_fmt=raw,
compat=1.1,lazy_refcounts /var/lib/libvirt/images/pool/win11.qcow2 20971520K) unexpected exit status 1:
qemu-img: /var/lib/libvirt/images/pool/win11.qcow2: 'file' driver requires '/home/mark/Downloads/Win11' to be a regular file
Could not open backing image.
Since this is my first time in working with VirtManager, I need help. Where did I go wrong? And what is the fix?

Re: VirtManager: Error in creating storage volume.

I'm not expert with VirtManager but I do use it as my VM system.

The error you include shows that it's trying to create a new storage volume based on an existing one. This doesn't match the description that you give. When you create the new VM, are you selecting the option to "Import existing disk image" ??

If not, then this is what I do:-
  1. Choose Local install media
  2. Pick the ISO image. I have a "pool" that points to all my ISO images, so I select the pool on the left, then the ISO from the list that shows up on the right.
  3. Check the OS is detected, else set it yourself, then press Forward
  4. Set memory & CPU, press Forward
  5. Now for the storage. Like you, I don't want it using space on the main system partition, so I click on "Select or create custom storage", then "Manage..."
  6. In the storage volume dialog, I first created a new pool, which was set to the directory where I want to store the storage volumes. In your case, you'd pick your Documents directory. Give it a suitable name, press Finish.
  7. Now with your pool selected on the left, click the + button to the right, next to "Volumes". Check the name, format, and size. Leave the "Backing Store" empty. I don't check "Allocate entire volume now". I'm sure there are times where this option is useful but I've never needed it. Press Finish. It should be pretty quick and will return to the "storage volume" dialog.
  8. Select your newly created volume and press the "Choose Volume" dialog. Then press Forward.
  9. Now you can tweak the config or just press Finish to create the VM.

Dave88, thanks for the info. I will try your steps in a few days when I can get off my back (I had a procedure done today).
