Freeze after game exit

Post by MaximB »

Hi,
I'm using Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon.
I have this problem with many Steam games, and not even the resource demanding games, even light games.
The games run fine, but about 20 seconds after I quit the game normally (without killing it) - the system freezes and all I can do is hard button reset.
No Alt+Tab, no Ctrl+F1-F6, no Ctrl+Alt+Backspace...nothing works, nothing moves.
I've tried this with Nvidia 525 drivers and now with Nvidia 535 recommended drivers.

Reason: Moved from Other Topic to Gaming because the issue happens when exiting games.

Hello
I'd try 2 things if I were you:
1. If you haven't installed Steam using steam_latest.deb file from Steam Website, I'd try that.
2. Upgrading kernel to a more recent version.

1. Ubuntu 20.04 focal had a problem with drivers, but I assume you didn't have problems before.

2. "df -h" - This is probably no coincidence.
77% /
97% /home
I guess it's time for spring cleaning of the system.
Especially since Steam files are located in the user's directory. ( /home/user_name/ )
So you need some free space.

I've got the same Steam version already and it is up to date.
All packages are updated via 'sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade'
Regarding space, I have 11GB free at / and 67GB free at /home and 64GB free at /storage - so I don't think this is the problem.
The one outdated thing is the Mint 20.1 version, instead of the latest Mint 21.3 ,but I'm not sure I want to upgrade the OS now.

Welcome to Mint forums, MaximB

You do have a home partition filled up to 97%. This cannot be but a serious problem. Performance degrades when you fill a disk to the brim.

Your system has seen some extensive/intensive use, you have many third-party software sources against an ageing base system and snaps which by some accounts the longer you have em the worse resource hog they become.

If storage usage had been "normal", residual configurations, conflicting libs, not-properly removed old drivers, obsolete shader caches, many things could have been suspects as cause of those freezes. I would have recommended making sure that the freezes occur only with Steam but now...

Hard-resets with a main storage excessively filled is also a very bad omen about filesystem health.
If you have installed smartmontools, you should be able to run a health check on your storage in Disks. Otherwise install gsmartcontrol.
When you are again forced to terminate abruptly a session, at next boot run in a terminal journalctl -b -1 -p 3 | nc termbin.com 9999 and post the link here. It will include all important errors from the (previous) session when the system freeze happened.

and 67GB free at /home
Maybe your Steam doesn't have a problem.
But my Steam had a problem.
I once only had about 50GB in /home
This is not enough space, to download game updates with add-ons.
Only after downloading the update was installed.
Then I need another 50GB of free space.
Total over 100 GB to download and install the game.
After installation, the installer was removed.
I'm just warning you because my system couldn't boot. There was no free space.

Edited
Only Tips:
1. You can you can name the partitions in GParted ( name and label )
This makes partition management easier.
2. You can have games on a separate partition.
I know, /etc/fstab is a bit complicated to automatic mount partitions.
And the game installer will always be downloaded in the steam directory in /home
So you will always need more than 50 GB.

Edited
You can also see how others try to find the problem ( system logs / netdata )
