[SOLVED] Not all icons updating with theme

Post by barleydrunkbear »

The system files icon will not update regardless of the theme/icon pack I choose. I know that I could change its individual icon (see image attached) but I wondered if someone might be able to help determine why it's not updating with the icons.

After the screenshot I tried manually changing it (I hadn't changed it before this) to match a different icon pack and changing it back thinking it might follow the style then. It stays as whatever icon I select (which I imagine is how it should be, once you've changed it).

Another way I might ask this: how can I get the system files icon to align and change with the system icon pack?

Thanks,

barley

Re: Not all icons updating with theme

1. Which themes are you switching in between?
Note that there is a lot of shared icons between all the Mint themes.
2. Which icon did you manually change? Give exact file path to the file(s) you altered.
Did you change the icon at /usr/share/icons/Adwaita/24x24/legacy/system-file-manager.png ?
Note that Adwaita is used by all the Mint themes as a "fallback" theme. Whenever an icon is missing,
Mint uses its Adwaita version.
3. What do you expect to happen? For the icon to change color?

Re: Not all icons updating with theme

Hi spamegg,

1. I tried switching between many themes (at least five or six) but settled on Mint-Y-Sand. The issue was that the system-file-manager icon would not change regardless of the icon pack I chose (not once in the 5/6 times, and I restarted the system between them in case that might have helped). The icon for the system-file-manager exists in many of the icon packs but would not change with the change of system theme.

2. I ended up manually changing /usr/share/icons/Adwaita/24x24/legacy/system-file-manager.png to /usr/share/icons/Mint-Y-Sand/places/24@2x/system-file-manager.png by right clicking the system file manager and navigating to its icon contained in the theme which I wanted to use (in this case, Mint-Y-Sand).
I didn't know that about Adwaita which explains why it would revert to it.

3. I would like to have the system-file-manager icon follow the system theme. That is, if I change the system theme to Mint-Y-Sand I would like the icon to be updated to Mint-Y-Sand's system-file-manager.png. More generally, I would like to not need to change a particular icon to follow the system theme when changing the system theme.

Thanks for the reply.

My system file manager icon follows the theme OK (every Mint-Y theme has a different colored file manager icon), so I'm not sure what is going on in your system. Maybe something is broken? I'm on Cinnamon 6.0.4.
Do you have anything in ~/.icons? It's a hidden folder.

In order to manually change an icon, you have to replace ALL the different sizes of the icon, not just one.
By the way, I just realized that system-file-manager.png is just a link to folder.png so replacing it won't work.

Note that if you manually replace icon files, you might have to restart Cinnamon with Ctrl+Alt+Esc to see the changes.

Hi spamegg,

~/.icons contains an index.theme folder. When opened that folder reads

Code: Select all

[icon theme]
Inherits=Bibata-Modern-Classic
I think something is broken at this point too.
In order to manually change an icon, you have to replace ALL the different sizes of the icon, not just one.
By the way, I just realized that system-file-manager.png is just a link to folder.png so replacing it won't work.
I can't say I exactly follow you here. I'm not doing anything wild to change the icon if that's what you're thinking. The menus in screenshot in my first post are what I'm working with. I suppose I haven't said but I am only having trouble with the icon on the panel not changing (so I've had to change that icon specifically).

At this point I'd like to get that icon in line with the system theme. I can pretty easily change it to follow the theme as it's only one, but of course the hope is that I don't need to.

Thanks again for the reply.

I'm going to set this as solved. I haven't had an issue with the theme since I manually changed the icon. It's not what I'd call 'ideal' but it works and it's quite minor.
