[SOLVED] New Install: Connected to Wi-fi but No Internet Access

Post by KlausJackson »

Hello ^ ^, it's my first time asking for help on the internet because I usually be able to find solution. I consider myself a noob, I have only been using Linux for 2 months on VMware and VirtualBox.

I ran Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS on VMware and it runs fine, automatically connected to Wi-fi every time. The first time running the VM to install Mint was normal, same with the second time. But the third time, "connection failed". I open Network Adapter in VMware and changed it from NAT to Bridged (tutorial on YouTube), doesn't work, the notification still shows the same. So, I changed it to Host-only and it said "connection established".

Code: Select all

ping www.google.com
the output is

Code: Select all

Name or service is not known

Code: Select all

nmcli d
the output is:

Code: Select all

DEVICE	TYPE STATE CONNECTION
ens33	ethernet	connected	Wired connection 1
lo	loopback unmanaged --
Thanks for all your help in advance.

If you need a temporary connection: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... ernet.html

Then, post what this shows:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz ; rfkill list ; iwconfig ; mokutil --sb-state

The temporary connection works great, thank you. But I would still prefer a solution that would completely solve the problem. Here's what my output looks like:

It looks like a missing driver, does this do anything:

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe piix4_smbus

Temporary connection to the internet is indeed only a temporary solution because it no longer works XD
The output for the command you provided me is:

Code: Select all

modprobe: FATAL: Module piix4_smbus not found in directory /lib/modules/5.15.0-100-generic

I'm not sure if a higher kernel would help or not. Someone who knows more about VMware might know.

Does this still show nothing:

Code: Select all

rfkill list

Yeah it doesn't show anything :( Last time I tried to run Linux Mint as a main operating system, I didn't encounter this issue yet because I forgot my root password so I had to install Windows again.

I hope anyone can help me fix this internet connection so I can switch to using Linux instead of running it on a VM.

Do you still have Windows on that machine? If so, disable fast startup in Windows:

Dual boot didn't work for me last time even tho I think I know pretty well all the steps (enter BIOS, fast startup off, secure boot off, etc). At first the bootable USB didn't work, I found and followed a tutorial on the internet that said I had to rename a file in the USB boot for the boot to work, then Linux Mint finally ran but unable to be installed because of BitLocker encryption in Windows. Apparently that I had to own a Windows 11 Pro to completely turn that off to be able to finish Linux Mint installation.

So after that, I chose to run only Linux Mint (wrong choice for a noob who backed up Windows in the wrong drive then lost all of my data in that drive). But I got all data back through Microsoft's OneDrive account tho, lucky me.

Currently I only run Linux on a VM and won't do dual boot until I feel like I'm ready. This internet connection problem is standing in my way.

I know this sounds strange, but it sometimes gets wifi going. Shut down & unplug the machine, remove battery (if possible), hold the power button down for 40 seconds, & try wifi again.

I'll have to try that tomorrow because it's already 2:08am at my place, but does this actually affect Linux Mint in the VMware? Ubuntu runs fine. Thanks for your help anyway, I hope my Wi-Fi will come back tomorrow.

I dunno, but no harm to try. You could also try a live session of Mint Edge & see if wifi works there. It has the higher 6.5 kernel as default.

You will not have a wifi connection inside a VM unless you use a USB wifi device and set the VM settings to allow the guest OS to control it

That's too bad, I don't have a USB Wi-Fi device. But isn't using USB tethering from my phone to the machine using a charger kinda like using a USB Wi-Fi device? That only works the first time anyway. I'm trying Edge ISO like sleeper12 suggested me.

A kernel change is unlikely to help based on what JeremyB said.

If that so then the only solution is to go get a USB Wi-Fi device to have a Wi-Fi connection inside a VM, I guess the problem is solved?
Edit: Mint Edge doesn't work, still "connection established" but no internet access.
