New USB external HDD not showing on Disks – What am I doing wrong .

Post by Papaya »

I am running Linux Mint Version 21.2 Cinnamon on my Dell laptop ( Intel Core i5 ) and I just purchased a new Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB HDD. When I plug the new Seagate 2TB USB HDD into the laptop , the small light on the Seagate case starts to flash , and then stops . When I look at the ‘’ Disks ‘’ it only shows the laptops internal HDD and the new Seagate 2TB USB HDD is not shown . If I start GParted the only HDD shown is the laptops internal one and the new Seagate 2TB USB HDD is not shown.

The new Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB HDD instructions make no mention of it being encrypted in any way .

Any suggestions or advice please on how to get the new Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB HDD to show up on my laptop.

Thanks

.

I have not used a Seagate HDD in several years but they used to have a program on them for istallation and formating.

Do you have it connected with the USB cable that came with it?

Also, are you using a USB 2 or USB 3 port on the laptop?

While the Seagate is plugged in, please provide the output of these command:

Code: Select all

lsusb

Code: Select all

lsblk
Also, when asking for help, always provide system information as stated in "how to get help":

Open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane.

Click the Copy button and then paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

No need to use code tags because System Information copy button already inserts the tags when you paste.

When posting information from Terminal, please copy and paste the text into your post instead of uploading it to an image website. It makes it much easier for members to view everything at the same time.

Here's how:
How to post results from Terminal commands to a post in the forum:

In Terminal, click and drag the cursor from the beginning of the output and scroll to the end. Don't use the Select All from the Edit menu because that only selects what is showing on screen.

Then, copy the results of the command from the Terminal by Shift+Ctrl+C or from the menu, Edit, Copy.

In a forum post, click the </> button from the mini toolbar that can be found above the text box where you type your reply.

Code tags

will be inserted. Place your cursor between the code tags and paste the results of the command between the tags.

Example:
copied results
.

Pasting can be done by Ctrl+V or right-click, Paste.

Thanks!

Also, when posting the System Information, please post without altering the text, which will show up like this:

Hmmm...neither of those first two commands show the disk.

Are you plugging into a USB port directly or a USB hub?

I had a similar problem with mine. They weren't getting enough power.

The laptop is running Linux Mint but is named windowspc@ .
P.S. Don't worry about the name of the computer when in Linux. You can change that with this command:

Code: Select all

hostnamectl set-hostname your_new_name
where your_new_name is what you want to use.

Just to chime in here....

What I find helpful is to open up a term window and view the log file in real time. Then plug in the drive and watch the discovery and mounting of the drive plus any errors.

So,

Open term window.
Type in:

Code: Select all

sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog
Then plug in the external drive and watch the log file. This might provide a good clue to what is going on.
