2nd monitor not working!

Post by goob »

Hello! I am recently getting into the linux space and I'm a beginner when it comes to it. I have not much of a clue to what I am doing to fix my issues. Currently my 2nd monitor will not work with nvidia drivers, when using the open sourced drivers that linux mint comes with it works perfectly fine but when using nvidias drivers it wont do anything. Desperately need answers! Trying to figure out the terminal has been a doozy.

Welcome to the forum, goob.

The short answer is you have no graphics drivers loaded. That is explained in Tips for Troubleshooting Graphics Issues (including external monitors not working) which is a sticky at the top of the Graphics Cards & Monitors forum. There is also information about Nvidia drivers there.

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA GP104 [GeForce GTX 1070] vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A pcie:
speed: 2.5 GT/s lanes: 16 bus-ID: 2b:00.0 chip-ID: 10de:1b81 class-ID: 0300
Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.4 driver: X: loaded: nouveau,vesa
unloaded: fbdev,modesetting gpu: N/A display-ID: :0 screens: 1
Screen-1: 0 s-res: 1920x1080 s-dpi: 96 s-size: 508x286mm (20.0x11.3")
s-diag: 583mm (23")
Monitor-1: default res: 1920x1080 hz: 77 size: N/A
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 15.0.7 256 bits)
v: 4.5 Mesa 23.2.1-1ubuntu3.1~22.04.2 direct render: Yes

The Nvidia proprietary graphics drivers are available in Driver Manager. No terminal is needed. What did you do in the terminal?

There are two steps with a proprietary Nvidia driver. The first step is using Driver Manager to install the driver. The second step is having the driver load at boot time. If you have secure boot enabled and you did not create keys (MOK) or you installed the wrong driver, then the driver will not load at boot time.

Is secure boot enabled? You can check by running the following in a terminal

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state
With an Nvidia driver installed, please provide the output of

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
and enclose the results in code tags as described in this tutorial: How to use code display tags on forums.linuxmint.com

Also, for your install, I recommend using the 6.5 kernel which is available in Update Manager. You will get better performance with a 5000 series Ryzen with it.

Instructions for upgrading to the 6.5 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 6.5 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
If this is the correct link, the latest BIOS/UEFI is version 2.6 and indicates "Support new Ryzen 5000 CPU." so you may want to consider upgrading.
