What did you use/do to decide what buses you were going to scan?
Hello SMG, I got all the data I needed to make a full Display Monitors conky widget from xrandr
I don't know how that answers my question.

I have no experience with conky. To me it is software that takes up screen real-estate and resources and doesn't really provide value for that trade-off so I have never bothered with it.
Logansfury wrote: Wed Mar 20, 2024 8:10 pmI'm happy to try that troubleshoot for you. My dog is begging for me to leave keys and give him some attn so I'm going to take him for a walk then I will be able to settle in and concentrate on troubleshooting.
No problem. Have some fun pupper time.
Logansfury wrote: Wed Mar 20, 2024 8:14 pmI have the miniDP - HDMI cable still connected at the card end. I can just replug this in and pull an hdmi out of one of the LGs or I can pull the cable from the KVM switch and plug direct into the Asus HDMI - HDMI
How is there a KVM involved in this set-up?

Could the KVM switch be faulty?

It is a 2xmonitor 2xPC switch the windows PC's 2 hdmi-hdmi cables plug into the switch port 1, the mint's 2 hdmi-hdmi cables plug into switch port 2, 2 hdmi-hdmi cables run from switch to the the LG 32" monitors

It's brand new and seems to be running fine

So brand new can't break? If i had a euro everytime things were delivered DOA i had a full gastank by now!
Try and plug all monitors without the KVM switch... if the black screens still happen, then we can exclude the KVM switch from this problem!

From what I can tell, the 2 LG monitors are hooked to the KVM switch and they are working okay.

The Asus monitor seems to be the problematic one. If it was me, I'd connect that monitor straight to one of the HDMI ports (which you know is working) on the GPU with an HDMI cable that you know is working (no adapter, no KVM, and no other monitors connected to the GPU) and see if it works.

If the monitor doesn't work with a straight HDMI connection, then you know it's probably the monitor. If the monitor works on the HDMI port, then that would point to an issue:
Something went physically wrong with the miniDP connector on the GPU or the miniDP-HDMI adapter when you ran i2cdetect.
Or something wrong on the OS/software side (seems unlikely to me).

If you find the monitor is bad, see if it has a reset option in its settings menu. You can also try disconnecting all cables (both data and power), hold the power button for 20 seconds and let it sit overnight. What model Asus monitor is it?

If all monitors are connected to the same gpu and the KVM for some reason shorts, it does interfere with the other monitors! The gpu could do a short reset, that explains the black screens for a second.
It's a cost-less easy thing to test, so why not?

Yeah, I suggested removing the KVM from the equation too when testing the Asus monitor. Methodical troubleshooting

I am more than grateful for any helpful suggestions and more than happy to take the time to implement suggestions. I have to feed and walk my dog but I will go thru both the diagnostic tests suggested here when I return later :)

Also, what i suggested before, if Timeshift did not fix it then maybe the new software made a config in your home folder. Timeshift does not backup your home, so it also does not restore your home settings. Purging the new software also removes any made configs!

I'm sorry I had some real life to catch up on. I am at keys for the remainder of the day/night and ready to start troubleshooting if anyone is around.

I would like to start with the i2c purge as I believe I am getting all my data from xrandr and this shouldnt affect my conky widgets at all.

What command should I use to do that purge?

This topic is about getting your monitors to work. This is not a conky widget topic. Please start doing the testing I and others have suggested or create a new topic if all you want to do is play with conky widgets.
SMG wrote: Wed Mar 20, 2024 5:29 pmWill the ASUS monitor work if only one or none of the LG Ultragears are attached? I would like to see if you can get

Code: Select all

xrandr --verbose
from the ASUS. I presume you can use an HDMI-HDMI cable to connect the ASUS.

Hello Koentje :)

It was i2c-tools, and it is the crap outta here!

sudo apt purge i2c-tools went thru the complete uninstall process. Do I need to reboot my system or should I just try enabling the 3rd monitor and see if this was all that was necessary to fix

Do a reboot for sure and then plug in your monitors to see if it worked..

That's what I'm here for :) The only reason I mentioned conky at all was because you were in the thread and I had specifically installed i2c-tools to get monitor info for a widget I was building.

OK. so.

I rebooted the computer and let all my startup automations do their thing and the computer to go idle.

I then shut down.

I then walked three counter-clockwise circles around my computer chair (just kidding)

plugged in the 27" Asus monitor 3, turned on power.

IT'S FREAKIN FIXED :D :D :D

on the login page, all 3 computer resolutions were proper, instead of the Asus showing a blown-out resolution, the computer went from login to desktop and all 3 resolutions were at my preferred and set 2560x1440, and all 3 monitors were in the orientation I had set from left to right.

Everything is completely and fully restored!

Koentje if the Atlantic Ocean didn't present such a difficulty I would come over and wash your car :)

I got 4 cars, so bring your bucket along!

But just what i thought, that piece of software probably made some config files in your home folder that Timeshift doesn't restore. Glad it's fixed!

Will mark this down as a learning experience.
