Unable to change resolutions.

Post by TheDip »

Hello I just installed Linux after being a longtime windows user (got sick of window's issues) and switched to mint. Long story short I'm unable to change my resolution and have followed multiple guides to fix it but am unable because of "xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default" I have no clue what this means or how to troubleshoot it as there is little information I can find regarding it. Any assistance is welcomed.

Welcome to the forum, TheDip.

Please open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click the Copy button in the lower right and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

The story is your system has no graphics drivers loaded. You cannot get or change the resolution until you have graphics drivers loaded.

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A pcie: speed: 5 GT/s lanes: 4 bus-ID: 05:00.0
chip-ID: 10de:2783 class-ID: 0300
Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 1.21.1.4 driver: X: loaded: nouveau,vesa
unloaded: fbdev,modesetting gpu: N/A display-ID: :0 screens: 1
Screen-1: 0 s-res: 1024x768 s-dpi: 96 s-size: 271x203mm (10.7x8.0") s-diag: 339mm (13.3")
Monitor-1: default res: 1024x768 hz: 76 size: N/A
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 15.0.7 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 23.2.1-1ubuntu3.1~22.04.2
direct render: Yes

That issue is explained in Tips for Troubleshooting Graphics Issues (including external monitors not working) which is a sticky at the top of the Graphics Cards & Monitors forum where you posted.

Please upgrade to a newer kernel series which will better support your hardware. (The Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon (Edge) Edition ISO is specifically for newer hardware like yours, but you don't need to reinstall.)

Instructions for upgrading to the 6.5 kernel:
  • Open Update Manager.
  • Select View > Linux Kernels and click Continue.
  • Make sure 6.5 is selected on the left panel and then click the top-most option on the right panel. An "Install" button will appear.
  • Install the kernel and then reboot for it to become active.
If this is the correct link, the latest BIOS/UEFI is version F66.

The Nvidia proprietary graphics drivers are available in Driver Manager. Did you install a proprietary driver? The 535 driver should be available in Driver Manager.

There are two steps with a proprietary Nvidia driver. The first step is using Driver Manager to install the driver. The second step is having the driver load at boot time. If you have secure boot enabled and you did not create keys (MOK) then the driver will not load at boot time.

Is secure boot enabled? You can check by running the following in a terminal

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state
With an Nvidia driver installed, please provide the output of

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
and enclose the results in code tags as described in this tutorial: How to use code display tags on forums.linuxmint.com

We can check to make sure the driver appears to be installed properly. With regards to secure boot, you can either disable it in the BIOS/UEFI so the proprietary driver loads or you can create keys (MOK) so the driver is trusted. (Directions are in the Tips Topic and I can also copy them here if you have questions.)
