Unexpected behaviour headphones

Post by just me nobody else »

Hi all,

I re-installed Mint (default 21.2 XFCE, updated) after some time away, and experience a peculiar problem.

When playing sound (eg from youtube or spotity) via my speakers, everything works as expected: I can use the volume setting of the sound source itself, or use the main slider from the volume widget (audio mixer). Both work as expected

However: when using USB headphones, the slider from the audio mixer exhibits strange behaviour: When it is at 100% or more, it works fine, but when it is at 99% or less, the output volume suddenly becomes 0. So the volume gradually goes down as expected when moving the slider from right to left and then drops to 0 as soon as the slider goes below 100%

The volume control from the sound source can still be used, but these usually have limitations (mininum volume which is higher than comfortable, only coarse control in the lower regions)

This means that sound levels become difficult to set. Some sound sources may have a standard level higher than comfortable, and it can not be lowered, by the main slider (because it outputs 0 when set to levels less than 100%)

Any ideas?

Here's my system

Reason: Moved from Beginner Questions to Sound because the problem is sound through headphones.

If you did not install additional drivers, the driver for your sound card is in the kernel.
Is this the device?
Device-2: Jieli UACDemoV1.0 type: USB driver: hid-generic,snd-usb-audio,usbhid bus-ID: 1-1:9
chip-ID: 4c4a:4155 class-ID: 0300 serial: <filter>
Advice:
1. Try testing a newer kernel ( Latest as possible )

2. Check reports / report a problem if nothing helps.
Read this https://linuxmint-troubleshooting-guide ... where.html
Check which kernel is supported https://www.kernel.org/
Reporting bugs with drivers is here
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/

3. I may also suggest updating the system,
this should allow you to install a newer kernel.

Thank you for your taking the time to reply.

I can not confirm, nor deny, that your quote it the device. It is a brandless USB headset circa 10 y old. My guess is that this is the device, but not sure.

My system is up to date according to the update manager.

I am somewhat hesitant to install a new kernel. I am not confident enough to be sure that it won't mess up things.

Also, considering the age of the headset.... if it wasn't fixed in a kernel of 2022, I do not have much hope that it will be fixed now.

You are using a kernel that is supported.
I also do not guarantee that the driver will be repaired,
or that kernel updates will be in this version of Ubuntu.
But if you don't try to ask / check in https://bugzilla.kernel.org/
then you won't know.

Have you tried adjusting volume with alsamixer? (You may need to press 'F6' when you start alsamixer to select the USB device.)

Alsamixer works.

However, it is not really a solution. Another slider to control, another step to take before being able to use the system.

It's a work-around at best.

(unless somehow alsamixer can be integrated in the normal volume control)
